Title: lflaky skin-bumps and odor
Post by: Rocks Mom on February 27, 2006, 04:44:41 PM
:dontknow: I took Rock to the vet not to long ago and she told me that he had some sort of fungus. She gave me these pills for him to take and it helped  a little (at least I thought it did)
Now he has these bumps (like pimps all over) and he is shedding more than usual. He also has this odor about him that he has never had. Does anyone have  HELP for my poor Rock?????????????????

Poor little Rock.  I am sorry I cannot help. this sounds like nothing I have ever encountered.  I do know that fungal skin infections can ber very stubborn and may take more than one treatment to cure.  I would take Rock back to the vet.  If your vet has does not know what it is, then ask for a referral.  Perhaps there is a veterinary dermatologist in the area, or at least a regualr vet who is very good with skin diseases?

I did find this article online.  I Googled dachshunds, flaky skin, and odor.  You might want to search and see what you can find, then see if it sounds like Rock's condition.  http://www.dachshund.org/health_sebborhea.html

Good luck to you!

I know when Sgt had a fungus, it took several rounds of the medicine before it cleared up (I never thought it was going to go away).  I can't remember if he smelled funny too.  Could the smell be Rock's glands and they are just acting up at the same time?  I hope he starts to feel better.

Skin infections and fungus can be caused by food and contact allergies... look into diet free from Corn, Wheat and Yeast for starters. Check out the link below

Jen-  I was going to say the same thing about it possibly being allergic reaction.  My parents had a dog who got flaky, itchy skin from the shampoo they were using and she was allergic to grass.  So my dad have to give her bath's with special shampoo for allergies and it seemed to help her a lot. I think it was called Histicalm..  But, before you use any new shampoo I would check it out with your vet to see if he thinks it could be allergies like she had.  Because if not, the shampoo could iritate the skin worse.  Poor Rock, please let us know what you find out when you take him in to get checked.
