Title: Doggie Diarreah Epidemic
Post by: Eileen on February 22, 2006, 04:38:55 PM
Hi everyone.  Just checking in.  Kleine recovered from her bout of diarreah and is up and walking again.  She MUST remain on 5 mg of prednisone a day, it appears, or she goes down.  The diarreah had just done her in, poor thing.  After a visit to the vet, a shot and antibiotics, she's back on track, thank goodness.  However, now Luther has it.  He eats everything in the backyard forest, so I did get him a Giardia shot a couple of weeks ago, but he had the same darn thing Kleine had.  And what a mess that was to clean up, I might add.  And what is weird is that in testing both of their poopies, the vet said they both had a high amount of YEAST in their poop.  I have been trying to figure out where they could have gotten this.  I feed them Science Diet Small Bites for Seniors, Pupperoni treats and Greenies Bits.  The vet said none of those things should have caused it.  Any ideas out there?  Kleine does not eat anything outside...just Luther-boy.  PS  I did start giving them some plain yogurt, but the vet said that would actually be good for yeast.  I am thinking that I am not going to give them yogurt anymore though because it seems too coincidental to me.

Definitely a headscratcher on where the yeast is coming from.   It doesn't take much for the bacteria to take hold though.   Both Rudy & Max were quite prone to bouts of diarreah from scavenging.   We found that sulfa drugs worked the best to clear them up.  I think the two we most commonly used were Sulfazasalomine and Metraozinadole.   A lot of the problems with the scavenging stopped when we moved to a house with a fenced backyard.   I know Max still loves going after rabbit droppings, but those seem to have little effect on him other than leaving him with really bad breath.

I found the diarrhea tends to run in cycles.   My guys would get several bouts over a 2 to 3 month period and then there would be a period of "calm" lasting from 6 months to over a year.   I can't remember the last time Max had diarrhea.  It's probably been about 3 or 4 years.

Poor babies!!!  And poor mom!  Willy and Alex have had diareaha twice.  Oh my, how it stunk.  We had to move the kitchen table and chairs out into the livingroom.  Then we news-papered the entire kitchen and the boys stayed in there.  It lasted for about two days.  I would think that yogurt would help the good bacteria and get things back in balance.  When my boys had the runs, I fed them plain cooked white rice and that seemed to help get things back to normal.
