Title: Food for small breed dogs
Post by: doxielady5569128 on February 21, 2006, 02:36:11 AM
Hey everybody,
I was wondering if any of you could give a suggestion on some dry dog food I could feed to Porky once he turns one in April.  Porky only will eat Beneful food and we cant convince him to eat anything else.  Right now he is eating their healthy growth food for puppies, but when he turns one, we would like to switch him to an adult food.  Here's the problem we are having, we tried the adult formula by Beneful and Porky chokes on it because the chunks are too large for his mouth.  We tried to get him to eat many other kinds of food for small breed dogs, but he just turns up his nose at it. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Porky's mom

PM,

This website has lots of good information -
http://www.dogaware.com

I have personally fed lots of the Purina products over the year and i would say that the Beneful is probably not the best one. If that is all that is available in your area you could try Purina One (which has small pieces). If you have a petsmart, petco (or other pet supply store) in your area then you have more options. I have fed Purina Proplan Performance and had good success with my show dogs... but about 6mos ago i decided to make the switch to Natural Balance and i have really noticed a difference in the coats and skin...  i guess sometimes you don't notice these things until something comes along to change them. I have also had good success with Natures Variety Kibble... they make a raw diet as well. Check out the the ingredients on the websites below

Here are some links maybe you can find a dealer in your area :)

I feed mine the Science Diet small bites.  All three of them like it and I like the fact that it is tiny pieces.  My two boys, Oscy and Toby eat really fast and I used to worry about the bigger morsels.

We feed Penny Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice. We tried a number of foods, but this is the one that she likes and doesn't bother her stomach...

Thanks for your suggestions.  I agree with the first post.  I do not really like feeding Porky Beneful because I think there are much better foods out there for him.  I have tried other foods with him and he just wont eat them.  I think we will try your suggestions and hopefully he'll find one he likes.  Otherwise I might just have to make him food myself.

I know Nutro has 2 small bite formulas out too. 1 in the max line that is chicken based and 1 in the Natural choice line that has the Lamb & Rice small bites.  One suggestion is if they won't eat any of them right away try heating them in the microwave for about 8 seconds and them cool them. It releases the aroma and I think they think they are getting people food sometimes when you do this.

I feed Chilie the Solid Gold MMillennia food.  She likes it a lot, and I noticed a change in her energy level when we switched to it (about a year and a half ago).  The Solid Gold line also has a small bite food called "Just a Wee Bit".  I wanted to try this with Chilie, but our pet store didn't have it in stock when we went.  Here is the link to the site and a description of the Just a Wee Bit formula.  They also have a store locator on the site so you can find which pet stores in your area carry the SG brand.

I have been feeding Innova's Evo for a while now and I have been very happy with it. Mine all seem to like it and their poop's are smaller:)
