Title: Fastest Dog on Three Legs
Post by: Jeri on February 08, 2006, 12:22:29 PM
Last night was trash night, so I dutifully gathered all the trash in the house and went out the front door to take it to the bin.  Poldie was hovering around the door as I opened it, but I didn't worry because my little amputee hasn't tried to run out in ages.

Sure enough, Poldie took advantage of the fact that I had to open the door wide enough for me and the trash bag, and darted out the door and across the lawn.   :walk2: I dropped the bag on the ground and took off after him.  I figured that catching him would be an easy task.

Leopold often pulled this trick when he was a much younger dog, but at 13 he is a good 8 or 9 years older than he was when he did this routinely, plus one of his back legs was amputated almost two months ago.  So how fast could he be?  As it turns out, fast enough that I missed catching him twice as he pulled away from me before I could grab him.  In fact, he nearly made it to the street before I finally got him.  Don't worry about the street too much--we live near the end of a cul de sac, so what little traffic there is can't go all that fast.

I went inside and told Kevin about what Poldie had done, then I headed back to the door to go out, retrieve the bag and take the bin to the curb.  And guess what the little jerk did?  You got it-- he ran out again (but this time I stopped him on the porch)!

Was I mad?  Heck no!!!  I'm too pleased that he gets around so well and feels good enough to make trouble.   :urock: You rock, Little Dude!

WOOHOO! :bravo:  Go Poldie! :bolt:  Now that you've showed off, you might want to not do that anymore!  It could be dangerous!  Stay with momma and get some belly rubs!

Love that spirit!  Dachshunds and animals, in general, are so accepting of their circumstances, unlike us hoomans.  Three legs?  No problem.  Deal with it.  End of subject. Hoomans hit by rough chapters in their lives moan and groan and whine and feel sorry for themselves.  These little guys just pick up where they left off.  It's amazing!  YOU GO POLDIE!

Way to go Poldie!!! :wav:

Ozzy used to do that when he was younger.  Now, when someone comes to the door, he will go out on the porch to greet our guest, but usually stays on the porch.  If he were to run out into the yard, a sharp "NO!" will cause him to stop and then he rolls over on his back, so I have to go out and get him!!!!

Jeri, my first Doxie was a three-legged little girl (well, she HAD four legs but one back one was atrophied and just swung in the breeze).  I found her in the street and obviously she had had some terrible accident and someone tried to fix her leg because an xray revealed a pin.  However, they never amputated and she still had feeling in that leg, but it was useless for standing.  It IS amazing how fast they can fly on three legs, so do be careful.  I am so happy to hear that Poldie is doing so well after his ordeal.  Lots of pets to him from Colorado.....

Great job Poldie  :thumb:

That's amazing.  When you consider Poldie's history, any lesser dog would have thrown the towel in...several times.   I'd love to bottle whatever gives him his drive.   I'd make a mint selling it.
