Title: Need Rays for bichon!
Post by: lunakat on February 05, 2006, 10:18:28 AM
We have a doxie (Fritz) and a bichon (Sweet Pea) in the house, and they are the best of friends! in fact last night they were sitting on the carpet side by side last night and the Sweet Pea was cleaning out Fritz's ears! But for the last couple of days our Sweet Pea n appears to have caught a cold! She has been hacking up stuff and swallowing it and, she has been sounding kind of flemy. Yesterday she wasn't quite acting like her chipper self. This morning she was worse, she has been shaking like a leaf when she exhales so as I type she is being rushed to the emergency vet :ambulance:! I know Fritz's sending her rays (he is whining cause he doesn't know where she went) Could I get some rays from ya'll here? I am really worried!

Colitis is a bear!  Cajsa has that and it is a result of food allergies.  If you need any info/support/help with that let me know!
Kennel Cough is not something I've ever had experience with, but I am wishing Sweet pea an easy time with it.  Rays going out from KY.

Can't get into reg vet until this afternoon. Colitis form food allergies? Hmm I will ask vet. What do you do for your pupper Cajsa?

I don't think colitis is always because of food allergies, but in Cajsa's case it is.  We didn't know it until last summer though and didn't know what she was allergic to until Thanksgiving.  Cajsa will be 3 this month and she started having episodes of bloody/runny/mucousy stool around 6 months old so it took us a while to figure it out.
Cajsa's can be triggered by stress as well, like if we travel then she is probably going to get the runs, even though it probably won't be bloody.  This happens even when we go to places she's been all her life like my grandparents or in-laws.  When she has a flare up I give her boiled chicken breast (or sometimes chicken thigh) without the skin mixed with some rice I make with the broth.  I just make instant rice so it doesn't take too long.  Generally after a day or two of that she is better and her little gut is settled down.  If it's not better then we take her to the vet for meds.  The only reason I don't take her immediately is because I know what it is and what usually works to fix it.  I did take her immediately when she was a puppy and I wasn't sure if it was the same thing happening everytime.  She tends to be very puny when it happens and we have to really watch what she eats or she will get ill.  Her main trigger is tomato of all things.  No other foods have caused her problems as far as I know.  Artificial preservatives and additives tend to make it worse though so we stick with natural foods.

Thanks April for the diet info! The vet said to give her babyfood, strained chicken flavor.  So that's what we have been feeding her for the last couple of days. Thanks you guys for all the rays! She is doing much better! Almost back to her blitzing self. We were worried about fritz for a while because he was depressed and wasn't eating. But he has improved, chasing his sissie all over the yard! He even went to the vet and got his bortedello shot, and was told he needs to be in a D-I-E-T! Oh no! Oh well, more walkies less treaters....

You might want to check the label on the baby food.  Sometimes, but not always, chicken/turkey baby food has things like onion salt added and that can irritate an already irritated gut.  That's why I just went with cooked chicken that I made.  I haven't bought a single jar of baby food for either child, Cajsa or Elf! lol  They just always preferred fresh foods instead.  Just an FYI.
