Title: Greenies
Post by: Adela on January 19, 2006, 01:28:15 PM
Watched the news last night and they had a segment on Greenies. I haven't been around in awhile so I am out of the loop when it comes to Greenies. I have bought them before and I know they are a favorite for your fur kids so I am wondering what is the verdict from this group.
Thanks,,,,Adela

Hey Adela! How are you and the kids??
I will not give Hallie greenies anymore. In addition to the stories on the news, last month a pekingnese died at my vets due to a blockage from greenies. The dog didn't choke on it, it just gummed up in her intestines, it was the next day after she had eaten it. Apparently it doesn't digest well. I figure why risk it, so our bag of greenies were tossed. I'm just hoping we don't get any bad press on bully sticks because that is the last thing now I will give her. LOL.

Thanks Dee... :thumb:

The kids are so great...I took Ninya and Ochoco to the vet for their first dental cleaning and Och's teeth were remarkable for him being 8 years old. She said he had the best teeth ever  :headbang:. They also had glands expressed, nails and ear cleaning. Nin's teeth had some tar tar and starting gingivitis but she said that they cleaned up really good. Bella has taken to sleeping on the sofa..she really belives she is a doxie and wants on our laps like the other two..it is too  :2funny: funny. She is doing great.

Yeah..I am not buying them for sure now that you have confirmed my fears. I usually give them carrots but once in awhile would get them a greenie. Not often, maybe have purchased 4 in the last few years. I will not be doing that again. That is too bad cuz I know some of the fur kids here love them.

Thanks for the heads..up.
Love ya, ~A

So glad the kids are doing well! Pictures pictures pictures??? It's nice to have that teeth cleaning done I'll bet. Hard to keep those toofies clean. If they went 8 years and this is their first cleaning and their teeth were that good, you have been doing something right! Bella sounds like a character LOL.

I know what you mean about the greenies. Hallie has only had a few too and those I would hand hold for her and she would just get a couple bites off, then I'd put it up. But I'm not taking chances either. Too bad since it did seem to help with the teeth and Hallie loved them too. I just brush her teeth 1-2 times a day now and am hoping that will be enough, plus I do still let her have bully sticks...

I haven't given them to Cajsa in a while because of having to eliminate things from her diet due to allergies.  We are adding things back in and she now has a good selection of foods to eat/snack on.  This past week she actually got a rawhide bone for the first time in nearly a year.  I've not given her any greenies yet, but I'm not opposed to giving her the little bits on the rare occasion - if they don't upset her tummy.  Certainly not everyday or even every week more like once a month or so at most.  She never chewed off large pieces of greenie when I gave her the bones although some dogs do and that would most definitely cause blockages regardless of what it was.
So, I guess my take on the recent news stories about greenies is that you should be very careful and not give them except on the rare occasion.  I've personally seen the remains of greenies when Cajsa has had her tummy emptied (remember she's the goat dog! lol) so I know it takes longer than 24 hours to digest and or pass through the system.
