Empty arms and heart

This month Duncan's lymphoma started raising havoc with him.  For the 2nd time he became extremely weak and refused all offers of his favorite foods.  He spent Saturday, Sunday and Monday at the hospital where they hydrated him and ran all kinds of tests.  It appeared the small cell was converting to large cell.  They were able to get his calcium levels down and he was feeling good on Sunday.  The oncologist gave him an injection with a different chemo drug that possibly could keep the lymphona under check.  Yesterday the calcium started rising again and his appetite was on the downswing.  Today he was back to where he was Saturday plus walking hunched over and trembling badly. 

Tonight I laid down on the floor with him trying to comfort his pains and decided I couldn't subject him to more of this and a future of trials, tests and shots that only maybe and might help keep cancer at bay. 

So it is with a aching heart I have to tell you, my dachshund family, that Duncan crossed the Bridge at 9:12 p.m.  The vet tech who assisted him on his journey said she had met Duncan this past weekend and knew all that he had been going through and that I had made the right decision for him.  In the last 15 months he totally captured me and took his place on my right side of my heart to balance Clifford on the left.

Oh Mike.......Our hearts are sad tonight hearing of Duncan's journey to the Bridge.  My friend, October has become a sad month for us.  I'm sure that Sarge will be giving lessons on how to properly chase monster mowers and they will be sharing tales of their favorite toy....the Bobo's.  Hugs to you, Mike.  God-speed Duncan......Dee, Dave, and Duggie

How heart breaking this is to read.  Mike, you did your ALL for Duncan.  You've got to know in your heart that while he was with you for only a relatively short time, he received the most love any dachshund could ask for.  What a buddy he had in YOU.  I'm so sorry his sickness overtook him but you were wise and did the greatest kindness towards your sweet Duncan.  You let him rest and have peace.  No more pain.  Bless you, Mike, for loving such a good boy.  Thank you for being his loving hooman.

Mike, we are desperately sorry for your loss and know how bereft you must feel.  What a brave little man Duncan was and such a character.  Clifford will be proud of him too.  Bless you for loving him so much and giving him  the best of life.  We will miss him too.

We are so sorry to hear this. We had hoped that you and Duncan would have many years together. Duncan could not have lived out his final days with a better Dad. I know that no one could have done more for him. We grieve with you. Many old friends greet Duncan at the bridge.

Oh, Mike.  I am so sorry to hear this.  These little creatures worm themselves into our hearts and make a big hole there when we have to say goodbye to them.  Know that you did the right thing for Duncan, and you will get to see him again one day.  I know how you are feeling, but do remember the good times, it will help a little.

How very belatedly am I reading this?  I am soooo sorry for your loss.  I apparently have just not scrolled down and looked at the other topics.  I am sure my dad has one more spot in his rocking chair for Duncan, since my dad never met a dachsie he didn't like!  How hard it is for us to do the best and kindest thing of all for our furkids - and you did it.  Hugs!

We are so sorry to hear that you had to let Duncan go.  It is so hard to make that decision.
We all know that Duncan really lucked out finding such a loving and wonderful dad.  Sure wish it had been longer but you gave him a very good life while you had him.
Now he and Clifford must be having a great time telling tales about their time with you.

Oh Mike, without words here.  Duncan had the best dad he needed the last 15 months.  He was loving and loved. Grieving just sucks, wish I could give you a big hug. You were very brave for both of you. You are in my heart.
