Dachsienut

Greetings, wiener friends--it's been an age since I posted, but I'm here today because we are encountering a health challenge with sweet Roly, our 13 year old. He was hesitant to step on his left rear paw and when he did, was holding it funny--extending his "wrist". It's also making him have a hard time on the kitchen floor which isn't very slick but not the greatest traction. Rick took him to our awesome holistic vet this a.m. and she diagnosed the problem as corns in his foot pads.

She pointed us to some info about greyhounds because it's a common problem for them, that included several approaches. She chose to do a laser treatment on him this morning (wish I'd been there to ask what that does other than relieve pain--I guess I need to call and ask). After doing some other research online, I am left with questions about what has worked best for dachshunds since dachsie feet are a little different than other breeds'.

Anybody come up against this with their furbaby?

Also, I'm wondering if this has happened because his "wear pattern" has changed. He's recently had weakness in his right rear leg which has been vastly improved with an anti-inflammatory all-raw diet and some Chinese herbs and such (I'll spell all that out when I have a chance), but maybe the weakness has shifted his weight enough so that it's causing the corns. He has small ones on each paw but the larger one on the left rear is the one that is causing the mobility issue right now.

The good news is that she checked him for strength in his hind end and he is strong. :)

Until we figure this out, it looks like no long walks for the Rol-man for awhile. :(  Probably going to get him some http://www.therapaw.com/thera-pawboots.aspx boots, too.
