Warning! All Treats from China (not just jerky)...
I received this notice from my vet today. I don't feed anything from China, but wanted to make sure all are aware.

The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine has now broadened their investigation into dog treats made in China. Their focus originally was on chicken jerky treats but it has now been expanded to include duck jerky and sweet potato jerky treats. Investigators are searching for the cause of hundreds of cases of illness and death in dogs after consuming these treats.

The FDA has tested implicated products for multiple contaminants and toxicants and has inspected manufacturing facilities in China. However in April 2012 FDA officials went to China to request samples of their products for independent testing. The Chinese refused to release samples unless testing would be done only in Chinese laboratories.

Thus far the FDA has received over 1300 complaints from veterinarians and consumers about dogs became ill or in some cases died after ingesting the dog treats. The reports have named more than 20 brands. The brands most commonly named are Waggin’ Train, Kingdom Pets, and Milo’s Kitchen.

Many of the affected dogs were diagnosed with Falconi-like Syndrome. This is a condition in which the kidneys are unable to reabsorb vital electrolytes and nutrients. Normally these products are filtered out of the blood stream during the production of urine and conserved for use in the body. Symptoms include increased thirst (polydypsia) and excessive urination (polyuria). Glucose will also be present in urine samples.

Other complaints were non-specific signs of illness including diarrhea which contained blood in some cases, vomiting, lethargy and loss of appetite.

Given the number of cases of illness associated with the Chinese made jerky treats many consumers and veterinarians are frustrated and disappointed that the treats continue to be sold.

As of the date of this writing the FDA has no definitive link between consumption of these treats, nor has a causative agent been identified. The doctors of the Animal Wellness Center, however, are unanimous in their opinion that until this matter is resolved we recommend our clients not feed treats from China. To do so would be assuming an unnecessary risk for your pet.

Spanish Teckels

Thanks so much for posting this.

We only use dried natural sourced organic wild Scots and Canadian fish anyway but know the marketing worldwide for these commercial products  - and their price - is overwhelming in general.
Horrible products and produced from by-products by those who think nothing of eating dogs anyway.

I would never feed mine anything I would not want to eat either.
Better to eat (almost) nothing and that tht bit be healthy than load up on cheap and dangerous rubbish.  I include myself.....

It is 1000% safer to make  your own treats if you have a computer you can google any recipe chicken tenders for dogs you can just cut thin strips of chicken breast and bake them in the oven. Food dehydrators are not that expensive you can make your own sweet potato chews all kinds of healthy treats. Maybe if everyone quits buying anything from China they will get the hint never could figure out why they would get so buddy buddy with a Communist country then its is just appalling that our dumb government borrowed monies from them.
Guess they own the USA now very, very sad indeed, will get off my soap box I'm just a little speck have no say in our country any more. Oh i vote but it does not seem to count.
