One of my very distinct memories of 9/11 was that someone rang our doorbell at 5 AM and claimed to have one of our dachshunds.   In the mental fog of being startled awake, I took a count of our dogs...one...two...three.   Nope, not ours.   This dachshund was a b/t  and my guys were reds.   I told him it wasn't one of ours.  The person went on their way and I thought "Man, this is going to make one heck of a story at the office".  Obviously, the events of the day overtook this case of mistaken identity.

Over the years, I always wondered whose dachshund that was and what became of it.   More than 11 1/2 years later, I found my answer.   I was walking the Zs tonight when I noticed an older b/t female across the street.   Naturally, I crossed the street and struck up a conversation with the owner.   It turned out the dog was 13 years old.   I then asked how long they had been in the neighborhood, and they had been there for over 20 years.   I then started "Well, on September 11th" and before I could finish my story, the owner knew exactly what I was talking about.   It was Bella, and of course, he remembered September 11th as the morning their dog got away until the events of later that morning caught up to it.

Bella was quite shy and immediately retreated when the Zs approached.  Zeke was being quite bellicose as usual, and Zora was just genuinely curious.  She seemed like a happy girl and content in her role as a senior weiner.   So I'm glad the mystery dachshund found its way home and I'm finally able to bring a mystery to rest.

Spanish Teckels

We love a happy ending too.  Whoever found  Bella and went to so much effort to reunite her with her family deserves a best neighbour prize.
