Wow.  I was equally surprised that Reagan was a male dog.   Typically the females tend to be more nurturing.  Although there seems to be something about a helpless animal that "short circuits" the dogs predatory instinct.  I remember when Rudy-angel found a baby Robin on the ground.   Rudy was probably the most predatory of my dachshunds.  The Robin opened its beak as if to say "Are you my mother?"  Rudy seemed to be taken aback...long enough for me to intervene.   Sadly, the Robin did not make it.

Zeke acted almost identically with a baby squirrel that fell from a tree.   In this case, we did have a happy ending, as we placed the baby in a box in the tree and mama squirrel retrieved the baby.

When I was a kid, my dog was called Petunia(she was a "high beagle".  I got her from the local shelter and to put it very kindly she was a major wuss!! If someone came to the house, she would HIDE behind her stuffed doggy on the couch(yes it was a huge st bernard and bigger than her).

One day she was outside, and we heard a birdie really going bonkers chirping, I went outside and Tunie was next to the snowball bush with a baby robin right under her nose.  She was looking down at it with this relaly startled look on her face. Her tail twitched but not much.Mommy robin  was on top of hedge shreiking at Tunie.

She was tied to the clothsline so I went and got the rope and tried to pull her in, but it was hard. It was like she was afraid to turn her back on that vicious baby robin!  Robin was not a real tiny one, and the mom came and got it. Tunie was not interested in taking care of the baby at all.

My Twinkie angel on the other hand, was broken hearted the day a baby bunny was in our yard.  She saw it and went running over, her tail wagging so hard it was almost spinning!  When she got about 3 feet from it, the bunny hopped the 2 feet and through the chicken wire. Then it stood there watching Twinkie while twinke whined and cried trying to get to it. Given her actions with Zelda's litter, I am sure she wanted to mommy it!!
