Nice lady from our class taped her Monday night in Nosework, I didn't know she did that, it was very nice of her. She said I could share so here is a link

She amazes me, she is slower than the other dogs because she doesn't have the visual benefit of being able to see the boxes and cartons the scent is in (we are using "birch" scent right now), but she never gives up and is getting faster and faster at finding the hide.    She really loves this class it's been very good for her confidence she's so happy when we get there. We will be going for her first title when we're ready.

Thanks Papbouv, she loves it I think it makes her feel accomplished. When we practice she will race out in the direction I point her and sometimes in her exuberance, careen into a box (doesn't hurt though) and then she gets down to business trotting from one box to the next. She goes slower and more carefully in class. Interesting, in that video, scent had obviously pooled in that one corner of the room, where she drifted off to twice. We had been sitting in that corner and I had her treats in my pocket....hmmmm.

I did tracking (and obedience thru utility) with my last 2 kids so they did scent work but I didn't do tracking or go past a CD with Hallie because of worry for her back. Tracking can be over some very rough/uneven terrain and I didn't feel good letting her do that. And of coures, no jumping for her so no open or utility and we also stopped at RN in rally didn't go on to the next level with jumping. Which all sucked because we both would have loved to go on. But since she was young, I would always play the find it game in the living room on rainy days or when I'd have to leave her home alone, as I walked out the door, would throw a few treats for her to find so she was familiar with the concept when we started nosework which I think helped her a bit.

It's a really fun class all the dogs seem to love it and hate it when their turn is over. :)

Know what you mean way back when I had CJ we only got a CD dogs were getting injured because back then they has to jump 1 & 1/2 X there height. CJ was my 28 1/2" Bouvier 108# then a couple of years later they AKC lowered the height s. Rather have a healthy dog. Sure glad you both are enjoying your selfs. Papbouv

Yes wasn't that nice when they lowered the jump heights. Didn't help our doxies and a few other breeds as they always jumped shoulder height but it was nice the bigger guys didn't have to do as much jarring. That's nice you didn't jump CJ a lot of people would have just gone for the title. CJ was a big boy.

do you play hide and seek at home, treats at the end, we play it and the other day when I had gone out and they had been asleep in my workroom I left and Nick said it took ages to get through that I was not playing hide and seek ie the bath the back wardrobe the walk in wardrobe etc. Amy usually wins..............food fixated.............

I missed your first post Aunt Roberta we must have posted at the same time. I don't know if it is the class or the class and just feeling good lately but she sure has seemed happier to her old self since we started it. Did you notice how she looks like a boy dog in her harness hee.

LOL I can see the kids playing the game that wasn't there. Especially the little scent hounds don't like the game to end. I have played the find the food game with Hallie since she was a little peanut, good game on rainy days and also the few times I have had to leave her home alone, I always hid treats for her to seek and find as I went out the door. I think that helped her catch on to this nosework stuff. I don't play that game with her now because I don't want to confuse her and keep it clear that what she is searching for is one particular scent (birch) as in the trial she has to indicate that scent and not other scents that she might like better.

Good eye Barb, it's really interesting watching her since she's not reacting to any visual cues you can see how the scent works more, she never gives up the search so everything she does is for a reason, she kept going to that same part of the room away from the cartons so obviously was some scent lingering over there, but she kept searching til she found the strongest source of the scent. I can't imagine what it is like to be able to smell like that. :)

Marcia from MI

Auntie DD,

Mama put me outside and hid one of my treats and told me to go find it when I came in.  Well, I found it in two seconds and mama was disappointed.

Marcia here,

Danni loves to play hide the treat and uses both scent and visuals to  track it down.  So today I hid the treat on the bottom shelf of the end table, behind a box and she found it even before I closed the back door.  Guess she used my scent to track it down since I had been rubbing it between my hands when hiding it.

They are such smart kids aren't they?
