Yesterday Hilde was attacked by a pit bull.  I had come home from shopping and put her on her tether to go out.  I had just turned around when I heard her cries.  I ran out and was doing all I could to pull this dog off of her.  My next door neighbor heard my cries for help, and it took the two of us to pull this dog off of her.  Rushed her to the E vets and was told that she has 3 broken ribs on her left side, a nemo thorax (?), and I don't know how many puncture wounds.  The poor baby has just about lost all of her hair where they shaved her around her wounds.  They gave her a shot of antibiotics, pain meds. and gave her fluids. We got home sometime around 12:30 am.  She is now at my regular vets being looked after and evaluated.  How can people let a dog like that run loose?  Because of their inconsideration, my poor baby barely lived to see another day.  Please send Hilde some of our famous Wiener Writings healing rays.  She sure can use them.

OH MY FREAKING GAWD.

I don't know what was scarier here -- reading that Hilde was attacked or reading that you got this dog off of her.  HOLY CROW.

It does sound like she will make a complete recovery, though, in time.  It will take a few months of restricted activity, but she is young and strong.     Healing rays going out to everyone!

In the meantime, have you filed a police report?

Called Animal Control.  All they can do is patrol the area of my neighborhood looking for the dog.  If they find the dog the will pick it up and try to find the owners.  They told me that is very hard to find a dog's owner if it is not chipped or has any tags on it.  Of course, this dog didn't even have a collar I could grab onto.  So keep all paws crossed we luck out, but don't bet on it.

Ugh Darcel, that is horrible, poor babykin and what an awful shock for you too.  I pray the owner of the beast gets caught and fined appropriately.  How on earth can anybody be so irresponsible, it really makes me so mad, we hope Hilde is resting and not in pain any more.  Poor little baby must have been terrified. Thank goodness you and the kind neighbour were able to save her.

Red was horrifically savaged by a dalmatian three years ago on our usual mountain walk, Red and Islay were on leads and the dalmatian was free to charge Red, rip over 2 pounds of flesh from his neck and back and leave him paralyzed for three weeks. More than 300 stitches.....the owners were German and pretended not to speak Spanish - I speak perfect German ( my grandmother was Jewish and escaped to the U.K at the start of WW2) so retorted in German so they denied living here and ran away faster than Miguel and I could chase them with a terrified Islay in arms and paralized, bleeding Red baby.  We have seen them attacking other dogs in front of our home here on the beach since and with thhe help of our vet and some networking in the village got the police to pick them up ( living amd working illegally here) a month ago.  Too late to get them for what they did to Red.

I wish with all my heart that the owners of the pitbull and their dog are caught quickly and , above all, that sweet little Hilde is well soon and you can both feel safe again and get back to enjoying a peaceful Christmas. Healing and sunny Spanish rays heading both your ways.
Spanish Teckels, blessed to be owned by Red and Islay.

Sending rays Hilde's way.  Our Max-angel was attacked twice by a Basenji.  First time, he had some puncture wounds.   The second time he needed seven surgical staples to fix him up.   He survived, no worse for the wear as his hair grew back and covered the affected areas.

Rays to Hilde for a speediest recovery!  I hope that the perp is caught and the owners severely punished, and they should have to pay all the vet bills too, plus while the laws don't allow for it to any real extent, I think that Hilde should get compensatory damages for pain and suffering, not to mention the mental trauma.  Get feeling better soon, Hilde!

OMG! So scary! Major rays headed her way!

When I worked at the animal rescue group the Program Director owned both a Pit Bull and a beagle.  The Pit turned on the Beagle one day and really tore her up, the poor dog had over 100 stitches and what did the director do, nothing he didn't really care that it happened.  I had one run in with a lose dog and that was way back when I had Sully Angel - a lab mix was let out of its yard by the owner's kids and went straight for Sully, the kids thought it was funny until I screamed at the dog and he took off.

Danni and I are sending rays to Hilde and we hope she gets well soon.

This IS awful!!!! Like Sandi, I can't even imagine! Poor Hilde! I'm sure she'll be good as new in no time. Crossing fingers that beast gets caught and soon.

Sending HHHHHH's & PPPPPPPP's for Hilde!!!!!
We hope they find the dog and manage to find the owners.  I would put the word out to all the neighbors to be on the lookout for it and if they see it they should call animal control.  Owners like these should NEVER HAVE a dog!!!!!!!!

Poor Hilde!  Big time rays headed her way.  Pit Bulls are notoriously hard to keep contained, being so athletic,  so whoever owns him needs to seriously re-evaluate their fencing or crating situation.   I hope that they are located, at the very least to get you assistance with your vet bills and register the bite.

Mike

Rays coming for Hilde to make a quick recovery.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Rays and lite Hugs to Hilde hoping for a speedy recovery hope you can reconsider the use of a tether might be safer to use a X-Pen or fenced area.Never have liked those under ground fencing, or theters, just for the very reason presented here. Only because some people do not follow the rules of leash laws or keep their dogs under control. It was not Hilde's fault or her owner or even the Pit Bull it was the owner of the Pit Bull hope it is found the owner of the Pit needs to pay for Hilde's vet care in the very least.Good Luck finding the dog & owner.

papbouv

How is Hilde doing ? hope she is doing better more rays & hugs.Patches ,Buddy & Papbouv, if not for Buddy Patches would have been attacked twice out on our walks instead Buddy was attacked being a Doberman he held his own.

Put an update on another thread, but I'll copy and paste it here, too:

She is doing, I think, a little better.  When I picked her up last night dr. showed me her Xray.  There is a section around her lower lung which might be part of her intestines.  It may, also, just be air that has gotten in through one of her many puncture wounds.  So, right now, we are checking resp's and gums every 2 hours.  This morning I dropped her off at the vet, they will do the checking.  She is on tramadol for pain and clamavox which is an antibiotic.  I don't know, yet, if she will be able to make the trip to Michigan to see my sister for Christmas.  Hopefully, I'll know today.  Thanks everyone for the rays and good thoughts.  I'll keep you posted.

I have fastened x-pens into an enclosed area right out the door so that no other dog can get by them.  It keeps the woodchucks away too!!!

WOODCHUCK!!!       WHAT WOODCHUCK????    ZENA RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!

Zack just calm down there is no woodchuck!!!! That was 13 years ago that you met that one at 3am.  You are safe!!!

Oh,  OK.  Thanks mom.

I have a feeling that with this particular dog, an X pen would have been useless.  He/she was one of the biggest pits I have ever seen.  In fact, I wondered if it might have some Mastiff in him/her.

More Rays on the way does not sound good about the lung keep a sharp ear out for Pneumonia very hard for dogs to recover from More Rays & Light Hugs.Patches ,Buddy,& Papbouv

Any fence might help in that she might bark at something trying to get through it by her, especially since this attack.

I know after the woodchuck ( I saw it first, thought it was a piece of wood, and Zack had to go investigate; we did put in a fenced enclosure.  I used the green metal posts and rolled wire fencing that was 5 ft high.  We did put a gate.

If you can you might want to try that. They even have fencing that is green so it is not as noticeable.
Hope she is feeling better today!!!!
Good Luck!!!

Oh my god poor Hilde andpoor you. Sending rays and hugs.
Our only time was when a dog jumped Amy and we had only had her for a couple of days, poor wee soul ran for her life, for home, but if David, our neighbor and freind had not been out in the street she would have gone down the street to the main road, it took ages to get her out from under the car.

OH MY GOSH that is one of our worse nightmares isn't it, to have our baby attacked like that. That is just horrible. I am SO glad she survived and I hope her recovery isn't real painful. Of course the owner that let this dog run loose is the real criminal and IMHO should be punished as if Hilde were a hooman child, if he is even caught at all. I am so angry for you guys how is she doing?
