Well, I'm officially experiencing my first bout with IVDD.   Luckily it's a fairly mild case-he's still walking, can potty and everything, he's just painful.  He's on crate rest, prednisone, pain meds, pepcid, vitamin E and Selenium, and ester C.  It's a lot of meds for a little dog, but I fully expect him to recover and be his old self.  :thumb:

My heart sinks whenever I see this come up here, poor Winston and so young. Sounds very encouraging that it's mild though and you are doing the right thing! Hard on us to keep them confined, I wish we could explain it to them. Prayers for Winston that this is a one time thing and goes right away on it's own.

I also have gone through a few bouts of mild IVDD with Bambi, and crate rest with prednisone always did the trick.  Sending plenty of rayz and  for Winston and  for worried Mom.

How is Winston doing today?

He's feeling fantastic, which, as you know, is kind of a problem of its own kind.     It's frankly amazing how quickly that prednisone made him feel better.  Luckily, he's a fairly obedient dog, so when I tell him to lay down and go nighties, he usually does.

Rescue Remedy may help mellow him out some help him relax,more rays & lite hugs.

That's a great sign!!! But as you say it makes it harder to keep them quiet. He sounds like he's being a very good patient though. I'll bet he'll sail right through his recoup time.  Maybe even better than you will! :)

the very hardest part is keeping them quiet !!!  This is where crating is a godsend.  Sending good thoughts that he keeps improving.

I don't know.  You'd think if he were really feeling better, he'd be agitating to get out.  But he's perfectly content to lie in his bed in the pen (I'm actually x-penning him instead of crating so he doesn't have to jump over that lip on the crate).  He goes outside without a leash, because all he does is potty and then wait for me to pick him up and bring him back in.  He's being terrific, but I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad sign.

IVDD can really play head games with moms and dads. You read something into everything with no idea if you are right or wrong. At least he is being quiet, and whether he's feeling anything or not, that is what he needs to be doing right now. And it really is good he's not showing any obvious signs of discomfort. Hang in there Kathleen!

Thanks, Dee Dee.  He's supposed to be seen not this Friday but next, and the vet that saw him last time was a veterinary neurologist, so I'm trusting her completely.  And now that I figured out the toxic gas situation    I think everyone in the house is happier.  Turns out vitamin E and Selenium together are a bad mix for your nose.  One in the morning and the other in the evening works out much better.

Just to update this, Winston is doing very well.  He's off crate rest and we're just treating him with caution, particularly where the puppies are concerned and with exercise.  He's off the prednisone and pain meds, too.    :thumb:

That really is fantastic news!!! I'll bet he's happiest of all though getting out of that crate. Now you get to play the game for a while of watching his every move and reading signs and symptoms that may or may not be there!  :crazyeyes:

Exactly!  If he lays down, I'm wondering if he's hurting.  If he's being stubborn about coming inside, I wonder if he's hurt and can't move.  Lots and lots of fun!

That is why I doubt I'll never have another doxie (or dog but especially doxie), once you get the screaming in horrible pain and face the possibility of paralysis or worse, plus once it happens it is likely to keep happening, that's pretty heartbreaking.  And why I wish there were more breeders like you, the backyard breeding with no research etc is really making the problem tons worse.

That's GREAT news!  How does he get along with the puppies?

He's great with the puppies.  He's always been great with puppies though.  He helped raise Reilly and Millie and was really protective of Murphy when I first got him and he was so shy.  With the pups, he washes their faces and cleans their ears-they love him.  It's adorable.
