I am, frankly surprised that Scooter is not canis non gratis at my friendly neighborhood animal hospital after today's vet visit.  I say this because my small brown dog decided to release a rather large fragrant poop all over the exam room, including me.  A fine way to continue a day which began at 6:30am with me outdoors shoveling the back patio for the third time in twenty-four hours (I HATE SNOW) because - as we all know - putting a wobbly-legged noodle dog with a bad back onto an icy/frosty/slippery surface is not recommended.

Anyhow, aside from Fecalgate, the visit went well.  Dr. M said Scooter is better â€" not "better" as in "hooray I am completely healed and I may run and jump and frolic at my leisure" but "better" as in "not quite as pathetic and terrifying as before, and also, now would be an appropriate time to begin feeling hopeful".  He said even if Scooter recovers no more function in his rear end, he should still be able to leave a productive and happy life.

Y'all know that sound you heard, wherever you are, about an hour ago?   Yeah, that was my giant sigh of relief.

So he still has to continue meds and crate rest, and we'd still appreciate care and hopes and prayers and good thoughts, but they feel like as much a preventive measure than anything â€" to keep him from relapsing, to give his back even more of a chance to heal...you know.  And he'll still have to slowly get reacclimated to freedom after that, but I feel things are looking good for my little invalid.  *g*

In other Scooter news, he is delighted at the rawhide bone I brought home for him to keep him busy in his crate.  So much so that he has already destroyed it, which is no small feat for a dog of few teeth.  I guess it's time for another almost-daily trip to PetSmart in order to stock up on more...

I was wondering what that whoosh of air was that came barreling through here "about an hour ago".  So glad that Scooter appears to be on the mend.  Take er easy greasy (yeah, my dad used to always say that......kind of....um......wei..wei....cute).  Scooter boy, watch your p's & q's and soon you'll be out of doggy prison.

Psssst Skootr-----SCORE!  That explosive poop is just the thing to git their attention there at the room of doom.

  :thumb: :apls: well done both of you......................I have had the poo once but in the waiting room, I could have died with embarisement, said furkid turns and sniffed and looked up as if to say "did I do good"
The next part of recoop is the worst, trying to get them not to "warp Drive " everything.
As for the hides.................Ollie is our fewer teeth and manages to destoy one in minutes.
Have a great day now that has been lifted of your shoulders and we will still send rays..............

So happy to hear Scooter is doing better.  Ugh, a sick dawg during the ice age winter. On the one hand, you have to shovel, but on the other hand, he's not crazy to go out and roll around in the grass.
What a worry the whole process is (I KNOW) but now you are on the upside -- just observe and remember, every day (for a while anyhow) will be different.  I found that Loki had mostly great days after her surgery, but hit a wall about 6 weeks post op.  Everybuddy's different, but don't get too freaked out if he has a bad day or two.
As long as he's poopin', I'd say he's recovering well.  :thumb:

Wonderful news!  Good to hear Scooter is on the mend!

That´s great news, we´re really pleased to know things are picking up, keep up the good work Scooter and remember Mum does know best.  Amazing he can still gnaw his way through a rawhide - Red and Islay love pigs ears, I´m afraid.
Scooter´s poop incident was maybe just the horror at being back at the vets again. It´s awful to have to say this, but Red can actually squirt his anal glands at will directly at the vets if they try to get near his rear end to trim his nails....
Spanish Teckels, blessed to be owned by Red and Islay.

Roberta

Yes leslie, I forgot that "the poop" is a big thing in back problems and going easily is fantastic.

Thank you so much!  I will try and keep hanging in there.  I have been a very good quiet boy these past couple days for Mom - I even sat on her lap for a long time last night with no squirming to get down.  GO ME.  It was nice to get pets and head-scratches.

How is Winston?

Yes they ARE the ones that stole his teeth!   Well, some of them.  It took a Specialist to take a dozen at once...

Thank you for the rays and hugs!

Thank you so much, Roberta!  I guess I shouldn't be surprised our dogs can mangle a hide even without teeth; they are tough and tenacious little beasts, aren't they?

I loved your "did I do good" story, too.  HEE!

Ha!  You're right - this is like being in an Ice Age.  We're expecting more snow tomorrow, and then AGAIN on Sunday and Monday.  BOO.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with Loki.  Because I am very prone to freaking out, believe me.  I will find your words a comfort!

I've never tried giving Scooter a pig ear...I wonder if he'd like it.  Glad to hear Red and Islay love theirs!

Scooter is impressed with Red's aim.

Cheers!

I'm so glad to hear he is doing better! I can so relate to the stress and worrying when they are sick!

Scooter - we are so glad to hear that things are better for you.  And I am sure your mom has forgiven Fecalgate (I find the name quite humorous).  Lily says to tell you to have patience and you will be free from the crate jail soon.   We are sending lots of noodle dog rays for super fast healing for you.

Noel - isn't if fun to be in the middle of a poop storm.  LOL!  Really glad to hear the Scoot-man is recovering.  I am familiar with those giant sighs of relief.  Stay warm!!

Dear Lily and Company (and especially you, Auntie N!),

Thank you so much - I am glad to be feeling more perky myself.  I hope mom has forgiven me for Fecalgate (she is very pleased you approve of the name).  I think she has - she keeps feeding me breakfast and supper and treats in between; and holding me in her lap (as long as I stay quiet) and telling me what a Good Boy I am.  *whew*  I will try to stay patient and hope that someday Mom will let me out of CRATE PRISON (though there's no telling if she'll ever NOT be terrified of every little thing I try and do).

It is actually above freezing for the first time in what feels like AGES here.  It is almost like summer!

Stay awesome!

p.s. Who's this "Cute Puppy" Mom keeps talking about when I mention your name?

Not to worry, Mom will calm down eventually - they all do.  (Except for Auntie DeeDee!)
And besides, the best way to avoid back problems is to have strong back muscles, and being in prison, er, crated, just weakens your muscles and makes us prone to problems.

But NO JUMPING!!
