We finely went out taking the dogs for a walk with me on my Medical Scooter should have went home when we were down the street by the apartments  a young man was walking his Pit Bull on a grocery chain leash not good the dog could have popped it at any time.We got past that situation went to the little park by my house went around started home went a different way to avoid the apartments this time. Went around the neighbor hood was on the next street over from the house some teenagers were tossing a football around in the street in front of the house where the Pit Bull was.The Pit jumped the fence went straight for Buddy thank goodness it did not go for Patches she would have been dead. The Pit has no collar on of any kind the teenagers are trying to get him Buddy reared up to meet the attack.Buddy has on his rolled leather collar with his tags on,choke chain and Halti seems to be the only way I can keep him from pulling so hard when out on the scooter. I have an Air Horn on the basket of my scooter so I hit that stopped the Pit he was looking at the Air Horn the kids got the dog I ran out of air in the horn the Pit got away from the kids we took off. I was not nice I said get your blank blank dog or I would  be calling 911.The teen age girl was saying it was Buddy's fault??? Buddy was on a leash the Pit was loose so do not think so.we got home got the back pack off of Buddy he wears a back pack when we go out walking he carries the water, treats,a toy, poop bags & a folding bowl.He had no injuries I could find thank goodness.
Buddy & Patches were out in the backyard guess Buddy was still pumped up one of them caught a Squirrel between the two of them poor little thing was dead not eaten had hubby tear himself away from the football game he threw it over in the brick yard behind us. they had a real exciting day a little too exciting if you ask me. papbouv

So sorry this incident happened. Sounds like the air horn was a great piece of equipment to have today.

The owner with the dog on leash is NEVER the one at fault. The blame lays with the irresponsible owner of the pit bull.

I would encourage you to report the incident to animal control, the sheriff, or whoever has animal control duty where you live. Not because it is a pit bull involved (I actually own two pit bulls + the doxies), but because of the irresponsible owners who allowed their dog to get into trouble - actually they set the dog up to get into trouble.

Pit bulls can be difficult dogs to own, for a variety of reasons. But truly the level of responsibility of the owner makes all the difference.

Glad you had a good outcome!

Janet
Owned by 3 dachshunds and 2 American pit bull terriers. They are all so alike in so many ways!!

I would agree with Janet that you should report the incident.   If the pit got out once, it will get out again unless the owner takes action, and from the sounds of it, I think that is doubtful.

I once had a pit that was off lead tried to attack me when I was on my bike.  Fortunately, this pit was not the brightest bulb in the fixture, and was trying to attack my back wheel.   At that point, I had gotten up out of the saddle and began accelerataing, causing the pit to overshoot.  By the time he circled around to give chase, I was up to over 15 mph and about to push over on a downhill, so the pit gave up.  I did report the incident to Animal Control, who did pay the owner a visit.

I had another instance where a dog attacked one of my guys.   I can't remember the exact circumstances (or which dachshund for that matter) because it was a number of years ago, but I do know the leather rolled collar and the tags stopped the aggressor dog from inflicting a bite wound.   In fact, as it turned out, we did see some blood, but that was from the attacking dog cutting its gums on the tags.

Aww, poor Buddy.   Definitely not the fault of the dog on a leash.  I've heard that pit bulls can be difficult to keep in a yard-they're good fence climbers.  I remember a pit owner telling me a six foot fence is an absolute minimum (I tried adopting a pit mix years ago), and they highly recommend an eight foot fence for pit bill owners.

Glad everyone got away safely-very smart of you to carry the air horn!

Of course everything happens on the weekend so will be calling in the morning just because this dog may go after a kid on a bike, plus the two teenagers are at risk if they keep trying to hold the pit. When the dog is excited trying to fight another dog the teenagers could be at risk do to redirection some dogs will attack whomever is trying to stop them from doing what they want to do.
I have been wondering if Buddy hurt the Pit Buddy has the biggest teeth I have ever seen on a dog they are huge. My Bouvier's were big dogs 98-110 # 28"1/2" tall Buddy is about 31"tall weighs about 98# Buddy's teeth are at least twice as big. Oh well Buddy not at fault the only thing I'm a little worried about is the three teenagers their word against mine. On the other hand when we go out everyone that sees us have never seen Buddy off leash and Buddy has his CGC bet the Pit does not.If I had the monies would take Buddy have him trained to be off leash so I could take him some where throw the ball for him so he could get more exercise.I throw the ball for him in our large back yard but would like for him to run loose.

Holy cr@p!   I am glad that Buddy is OK, and you too.  Something needs to be done about the Pit Bull.   :meme:

Oh my!! How scary!!  I'm so glad NONE of you were hurt.  I would definately report it too.   Porky was attacked by a Pit Bull puppy 2 years ago and he isn't the same since.  Before he would greet other dogs happily and was ready to play with them or just sniff them.   But, now he is very nervous so we have to check out the dogs in the dog park before we go in.   You are not responsible for what happened at all!!  No one should have to be afraid to go down a public street because of an out of control dog!!!

WOW! Sounds like you were very lucky and the air horn is an awesome idea. I would definitely report the dog you never know when it could attack a kid.

Glad to here you are all OK. I don 't get it thay are not even nice looking dogs.
This happens world wide, over here they are banned and the breed is being bred out, the next change is any dog that is found roaming the streets without collar, id is to be picked up and destroyed. This is after this incident that happened on Sat here the second in a week.

It is so sad that this could all be avoided if people would KEEP THEIR DOGS CONFINED IN THEIR OWN YARDS!!!  It is just as dangerous for the dog to be out of his yard as it is for everyone else on the street.  We have a fenced backyard, and we will never live anywhere without a fence.  Our dogs cannot bother anyone, and they are safe from cars and other dogs.  I am just as diligent about keeping our dogs confined as I would be with a Pit or a Rottweiler.  Why do people have dogs if they refuse to be responsible?

I'm glad Buddy is ok, could have been alot worse.

I say it's time for some pepper spray, that air horn will not stop a determined dog but pepper spray will.

JetEd73 thanks for the idea but here in Tulsa OK the wind is blowing all of the time most days gets pretty strong scared I will either get on me or my dogs. My MIL called me tonight said she read or heard somewhere to carry Wasp Spray ??? she use to live in the country she says it sprays in a straight line with allot of force goes along way???out. Not sure what it would do to the dog though sure do not want to get sued???.Leerburg.com I think the sell Bear spray may look into that. Thanks Papbouv

JetEd73

good using your head there...the wind can be an issue when using any type of spray

wasp spray, I wouldn't try it.

Went out today avoided the street where the dog jumps the fence went up and around the Fairgrounds was windy today gusting up to about 35 mph.Hubby re-filled my Air Horn did not use it at all so that was a good walk suppose to rain Wednesday so no walk for the furkids.

That makes me so sad... When i go to the dog park there are quite a few staffordshire bull terriers and pit bulls that go there and they are some of the sweetest, most submissive dogs there! They are always on their backs and sometimes THEY are the ones getting picked on.

In all the times i have been there i have ALWAYS been kissed and loved by these dogs THE MOST! They always want to see Fin and kiss him, and they are some of the only dogs who dont lord over him and make him submit. They always wiggle up to him on their bellies. One of them has a sister who is a Jack Russle and he is so sweet and careful with her when they play. SHE beats HIM up!

And although i hate it, im still a little nervous when they come up to Fin, i always make sure to really watch for any signs of aggression. But so far its the little dogs that i have had to be careful of.

Yes it is a shame some people have dogs and do not treat them right. We had a Staffy when my son was growing up her name was Chomps after the movie Chomps my son named her she slept under the covers and all with my son. She was a great obedience dog sit stay in front of a squirrel  on the ground.I like Staffys great size, short hair easy to groom great watch dog that can protect you if needed. They just got into some wrong hands and the whole breed is suffering for it the breed bans are trying to irradiate the breed wonder what breed will be next? there will be a next breed and a next Law makers are too stupid to lay blame on the people that have done this too this wonderful breed. They lay the blame on the dogs who have no voice,Why can not the pit Bull people that want to see which dog is better do Weight pulling contests. Or how about the people fight each other and let the Pit Bulls watch them. Will get off my soap box now.
