This is the latest update on Katelyn, Tara's daughter who had back surgery a few weeks ago. I copied it from her Caring Bridge page since it is long and easier for Tara to explain than for me to. This was posted today, so surgery will be tomorrow (Friday). We need to be sending prayers and rays again for this girl!

"Yesterday we got some bad news!  It was Katelyn's follow up appointment.  We found out she had a screw come loose when she threw up last week.  We think it was her pain med (Lortab) that made her sick, so the Dr. changed it yesterday to Talwin and he also gave her a lower dose of Lortab.  We are heading back to Salt Lake this morning for more bloodwork.  Then tomorrow at 12:30 she goes back in for surgery to fix the screw.  She will be in the hospital another 3-5 days.  She is on bedrest until the surgery, she can only get up to use the bathroom and for the ride back to Salt Lake.  He is for sure fitting her for a brace while she is in the hospital this time. Although, he doesn't think a brace would of helped her save the screw last week, he told me I probably would have had it off her anyway, which is true because she was in the shower.  UGH!  Will post and let you all know how she is doing.  Cross your fingers and send some prayers Katelyn's way that things go well again, and that we can keep her together this time..."

Oh dear.  Well, it may seem like one step back but keep your eyes on the prize and soon things will be so much better!  Hang in there, Katelyn!

Bless her, it´s a painful job and we´ll be praying and rooting for her from over here. The screws will be risky for a good while yet and  a brace if definitely the way to go and even so movement ihas to be controlled.

Having been through a multiple reconstruction of my spine six years ago, I can understand how she´s suffering.  I had to wear the full spinal hard brace for 9 months constantly - except in bed and shower - then 18 months thereafter for 9 hours a day, now occasionally still.  Every slight twist or sudden movement can cause a screw to loosen or break the bone growing around it.  I had to have three re-screwed 15 days after the op when we had to brake suddenly in the car on the way back from the hospital.....  Now have two constantly loose and have to restrict movement again after a fall this Summer. You get used to it, I´m afraid.

Katelyn´s great advantage is her age and the bone will grow around the screws quickly.  Pray for her safety and calm during these coming months as the healing process continues.

Oh dear!  I am so sorry you guys have to go thru this.  I have a titanium plate and six screws in my neck due to two disks that ruptured.  You have to be so careful with stuff like that.  Anything to do with the spine can be painful and you never know how recovery is going to go.  I now have to contend with numb hands at night.  I can relate to the pain meds making her sick.  Its awful.
I will keep Katelyn in my prayers.  Please keep us posted on her progress.  I really feel for her.

I now have to contend with numb hands at night.

A few years ago I discovered my hands sometimes go numb when I am asleep when I woke up about 3 a.m. and there was a stranger's hand lying on my head!!!  It was pitch black in the bedroom and my heart about jumped out of my chest.  As soon as I got up the nerve to move, whatever was getting pinched released and the feeling flooded back into my hand and it suddenly wasn't such a strange hand.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

:meme: Without trying to scare you, one day I was cleaning the kitchen window and I looked down at someone's right hand wrapped around my waist.  I thought it was D'Niel - it was my hand.  The next thing I know, I'm on the floor with a stroke and D'Niel is on the phone to 911, and I keep trying to ask him why he had put his hand around me, and it turns out the all that's coming out of my mouth is gibberish and he's getting more panicked by the minute.
