Loui got bit by something; we dont' know what.  It all started Sunday when he threw up 10 times and then his face swelled up.  After more examination, I couldn't locate an obvious wound but noticed his stomach and chest were broken out in hives.  I called the vet and she told me to give him benadryl.

His swelling has gone down but he still had trouble keeping food down so I took him to the vet yesterday.  :ambulance:
She gave him two shots (one for allergies and one for upset tummy). She also gave me anti-biotics to give him twice a day and special bland food to keep him from throwing up. :bandaid:

He hasn't thrown up yet today. His face looks normal today.  He is still moping around the house and sleeping a lot. The bumps that were on his belly have migrated to his back.

We keep our yard perfectly manicured because of the dogs. We've only encountered one snake in the three years we've lived there but have found dead hornets in the grass.

Any other wieners out there with bug bite/sting experience?

Thanks,

Loui's mom

Hi we had an incident like that the other month with Amy "Mum" put her in her crate in the car with what was later found to be a Bee, after a walk we had gone to my mothers to look at something when Amy started vomiting, and rubbing her face on the carpet and was very agitated. Drove like a maniac home, ph'd the vet. My fear was it was a snake bite.
The on call vet said it sounded more like a insect bite, he said to look at her eyes they would be dilated if a snake bite and also she would probably be dead by the time I had ph'd. So that time I had no anti inflams and he said to give her 1/8 of a panadol.
I had said I used to keep Benedryl and he said no, to get Zyrtec (cetirizine hydrochloride) as dogs now they say should not be given benydryl. Some one else on the board confired that. Cannot remember the dose but I would cal the vet first to confirm what to give next time.

Poor loui, hopefully you are over the worst.

Thanks for the info and well wishes.  Loui is almost back to normal today.  :thumb:I've heard that too about the Zyrtec. One vet says to give them Zyrtec and the other vet says to give them benadryl. I guess they all have their own theories.

Last summer, Delilah decided to eat a bee and got stung on the tongue.  She got sick (vomiting) and hives as well.  We gave her Benadryl (per the vet) and she was back to normal the next day.  Hope Loui's better now!  :bandaid:
