I wasn't aware that his anal's were infected as well. Sounds just like my JR - runny eyes, ears, goo between his toes, and continuous anal infections. He also had continuous skin infections and ear infections. Some years were better then others. It started when he was about 3 or 4. Think twice about the removal of the anal glands - only do the surgery as a last resort. It was horribly painful for my JR, if I had of know how much pain he was going to be in I think I might have reconsidered, and it really didn't solve the problem. We still had to do "butt" wipes everytime he went to the bathroom with "baby" wipes.
All in all, he lived 14 years before he passed away. I think the years of predisone, antibiotics, etc. took their toll. He had a great life though.  :thumb:

Sending loads of CA dachsie rays for our little Porky.  Allergies....UGH!  My Maddie was so bad last year (it was really hot here on the Central Coast) and very little helped.  This year, we are having a mild summer and she's doing much better.  Kiss Porky from us.

Thanks for the advice!!  Porky's glands are not infected, just inflamed all the time.   We will not remove them until we get at least 4 vet's telling us that it is totally necessary!   I just can't do that to my baby.   I'd rather have them emptied every 3-4 weeks than make him go through that pain!     I'm having a hard time coming to terms with all they told me about Porky's allergies.   It doesn't help that Porky cowers and hides when he knows its time to take his medicine.    I just wish there was a magic cure and he could be his happy self again.

Thanks!! I was wondering how Maddie was doing this year.  I haven't had time to ask.  Sorry!!!!   Porky does okay as long as he gets his benedryl every 8 hours.  If we miss a dose even by a minute, his little eyes start to swell and he whines.   I think the roof of his mouth has been itchy as well because I hear him at night sticking his little tongue in and out trying to stop it.   We've had a really mild year here too.  I don't think we've hit the 100 degree mark yet this summer!!!     I hope Porky adjusts to this benedryl soon and it starts helping him.  I hate watching him act like this!!

Tons of healing rays and prayers to you and Porky and all of our puppers and humans in need! I don't have a chance to post as often as I would like, but I follow the board faithfully and find particular joy in the closeness of this family. As a year-round sufferer of severe allergies, I can both sympathize and empathize to a degree with you and Porky. Though I have been spared the extreme severity that poor little Porky is experiencing, I know how hard it is to see your baby suffering. It's heartbreaking to see the dread they feel when it's medicine time. Benadryl has flavored tablets in children's dosages which my dachsies generally accepted well, but they also have dye-free and liquid versions. Would any of these be an option for you? If not, is there a hypoallergenic treat that could be reserved for use with the medicine that would create a positive association for him?
