Patches has very short legs in looking at some pictures some have longer legs & some have even longer legs is it just breeding other breeds have faults.Like Buddy is really too tall for a Doberman the AKC breed standard calls for a Doberman to be 26" - 28"  they are suppose to be a medium sized dog.Buddy is 30"-31" he usually will not stand still to let me measure him? They should be shorter.  Zeke had longer legs than Zelda or Zack and Zena is about where they are too.  Some people were breeding for the longer legs which is not the breed standard. they are supposed to be able to go to ground which doesn't work well with long legs.  Once the Dachshund Club of America started getting phone Calls asking for the long legged racing dachshunds they decided we had to stop doing our races for fun and wanted us to not discourage races anywhere.
They were worried about the standard being over looked and worried that they might end up like the racing greyhounds.

Hi both these articles are Australian Based  we have diffrent standards, but as Merion says its all in the forearm to chest. All 5 off mine have had short legs and I suppose about 2-2 1/2 inches clearance from the ground at the apex of their sternum.  The second artle is interesting as it talks about their gait, I have always thought it cute that I could see Olivers hind pads when he walks, it explains.

Merion, I thought you said: "They [the legs] are supposed to go to THE ground."  like duh, Les,  :doah: no kidding.  Brain lock AGAIN.
