By the looks of other Long Haired Tweenies, Ollie's ear hair is short.  He is bald on the tips.  I'm wondering if his ear hair had to be clipped when his previous owner turned him in to the shelter.  They did not have any background info on him.  A friend of mine who has had Dachshunds all her life checked him out and told me he was definately pure bred, not show quality, but pet quality.  Not that I cared.  I just wonder what happend to the hair on his ears.  If he is suppose to be a year old, it should be full, right?  But then again, he could still be just under a year.  The shelter guessed his age as a year old.  What is the general opinion.

I just love this dog.  He has more personality than any other breed or mix that I have ever had.  He even won my hubby over in just a few days and that's a feat in it's self.

I think Ollie is younger than a year just by looking at his face I have not been in Dachshunds long & Patches is my first.Or if Ollie came from a bad situation he may have had mats in his ears and some one trimmed his ear hair?.I think it takes 3-5 years to get a full adult coat found out the hard way do not spay a female too early or they get a spay coat is more fuzzy.
If any one needs to correct any thing please do.

Yes he looks young and the hair does take a while to grow, their front chest hair starts of sparse and grows eventually with age into a fantastic mane.
And just be careful what you wish for I  am owned by  one of the few Hairy's on this board, I always wanted a really really long hair and I got it

I would chuckle every morning if I woke up to that hair.  I love the piece sticking up in the middle of her head.  She somehow manages to pull it off and still look dignified.  The longhairs are beautiful, but I imagine there is a lot of grooming involved.

You can't see it in the photo but Rosco has a permanant cow lick on the top of his head. He always looks like he has permanant bed head.
He's a fiesty little dog surrendered to DRNA when his mother went to a permanant care facility.

Ollie's definitely less than a year old.   His snout hasn't lengthened to typical "dachshund" proportions.  I'd say he's around 7 months based on the picture.

I would agree with David -- unless you reported that he was completely potty-trained, which they should be by 10 or 11 months -- his snoot is not really defined at all.

As for his coat, well, anything can happen with the coat at this point.  It could end up long, short, in-between, silky, fuzzy, puffy, wirey and sometimes all of the above, all at once!  Keep him brushed, check for flea dirt and wait and see.  He is a looker.

Gabbe is my first and only long hair.  She didn't really get a really thick long coat (and it still isn't as thick and long as some other long hairs) until she was about 3 years old.  I agree with Roberta, be careful what you wish for, because it was a whole lot easier to maintain when it wasn't as long and thick.  LOL!  I also agree with the other and Ollie does not look very old at all.  What he does look is absolutely adorable!!

What a dolly he is! He'll get his hair back and then some like the others have said. Roberta has me ROTFL that picture of Amy could so be Hallie if she had just a bit more tan. Hallie always gets that spikey on top of the head too lol.

Here is a picture of Hallie at 10 months old and then a few years later...

Hallie always looks so regal in the pictures that you post.  I cannot even imagine her with the spike in the middle of her head.  She probably wakes up looking gorgeous and fluffy every morning, like those women on tv who hop out of bed in the morning looking fabulous and wearing makeup.  I imagine Hallie getting out of bed, giving a little shake, and every hair falling right into place.  She says to herself, "Back to my fabulous self"

Her morning look can vary if she has been hot and lying on one side that side is flat and the other looks like finger in light socket.

Dee Dee where is that photo of Ms H with the top knot ribbon
here is Amy's version, the only shot as she got a bit nafted

Wow Roberta I had to look hard to see if that wasn't Hallie! The unfamiliar collar is about all that gave it away. Spooky! She is such a little doll!

LOL Lowriders if only you could see both Hallie and I in the mornings...it's a bit of a fright!  She does have nice lay-ee down-ee hair for a couple of weeks after a bath but times like now her hair can seem to defy gravity...she's due for baffs but we're waiting until next week so she'll be freshly bathed for her birthday party on the weekend!

Here is her secret to managable hair and also a few Amy-esque top knot shots.

Hallie just has that "Mom, what ARE you doing to me?" look on her face.

I think Zora is thanking her lucky stars she's a smoothie.

Those pictures were a hoot.   :2funny:

Yeah, I don't think Ollie is more than 7-8 mths old.  He's not fully potty trained, but he is doing good.  He still has a few accidents.  He sure has come out of his shell the past few days.  He is so much more energetic.  He still has coughing and 'reveresed' sneezing from his Kennel cough that I'm giving him antibiotics for.  I had to take him to the Vets the day after I adopted him because he was just starting with a mild dry cough and I didn't want it to get worse.  He went through a lot the week I adopted him.
Here's some more profile pics and a play picture.

Hallie's 10 mth old photo sure does look a lot like Ollie does now, except he is younger/smaller in the face & snoot.    I'm not wishing for all that hair, but I'll take it if he grows it.  He's easy to brush, being a lap dog and all.

Those bassets hounds were on the move!  What a cute video.  I think basset hounds are so adorable to look at, but I have never gotten to know any.  Do they make nice pets?

Yes, they are pretty good pets.  They are not lap dogs, but want to be.  They can't climb fences and can't swim so they don't like water.  They can and do dig mostly for coolness in the dirt when they are outside.  They can be stubborn, too, which is why I don't worry about the stubborn streaks in Doxies.  I'm used to it.  They do have this chronic body odor that has been described as smelling like an old bag of corn chips, which is not far from the truth.  I have to spray them every day with Febreeze.  They are very loving and owner dedicated dogs.  They are not good watchdogs after dark.  At least mine aren't.  Once to bed, they can sleep through a tornado.
