Just think Sheriff had a wonderful 3 weeks then went to someone who loved him very much and was brave enough to make the right decision for him. Even though your heart is breaking you did the right thing which is never easy to do for anyone may he now Rest in Peace and one day meet you at Rainbow Bridge happy & healthy.So very sorry for your great loss.

Buffy, I am so sorry to hear about your loss.  I know what it is like to feel so helpless.  We lost our senior dachshund this March to heart disease.  It was so horrible watching him struggle for breath at the end.  He had already been to the emergency clinic and brought back from heart failure about 3 months before he died.  At least you got Sheriff to the vet in time.  Our senior Oscar passed away at home on our couch with my husband, waiting for the vet to open.  We have really beaten ourselves up for waiting for our own vet and not having Oscar put to sleep at an emergency clinic.  We never thought he would go so quickly, less than 24 hours, and we thought Oscar would be less scared in his final moments at our own vet.  I understand what a terrible experience you went through.  We rescued Oscar less than a year before he died, but it didn't make the loss any easier.  My thoughts are with you.
