rabies reaction

Hallie goes in for her rabies shot today and I am of course a little nervous. She and my Jessie also, would get a lump at the injection site that was somewhat painful and take forever to go away. Have any of your pups had any kind of bad reactions to the rabies shot?

That is a help Cheryl, thanks! I am hoping to hear good news too.  :) I remember hot packing her and Jessie's neck, I think I will start that as soon as we get home today maybe it will help. She gets her allergy shot once every 3 weeks, she had the last one a week ago I am hoping that is long enough between stimulating her immune system, I really hate giving her shots of any kind.

Porky gets a small lump too when he gets his rabies shot.   I'm like you though, clueless as to what to do for it.    I'm so sorry I can't help.  I think the hot press idea is a great one.  Sending rays for you and Miss Hallie.   I wish I could help more.

Rudy & Max used to get that all the time.  Honestly, I can't recall if it happens with the Zs.   It's usually a little tender at the spot of injection, but the lump and the tenderness goes away.   The tenderness usually went away within about 48 hours, the lump took a few days more than that, IIRC.   It's nothing to worry about, and certainly better than the alternative if, god forbid, your pupper was bitten by a rabid animal and wasn't vaccinated.

You guys are right, thanks, I wasn't thinking when I scheduled this the day before a holiday weekend (and in the late afternoon to boot!). We can deal with a lump that isn't too bad I just hope there isnt' much chance of a worse reaction happening after everyone local is closed.

I don't think you need to be worried.  Porky is the KING of allergies and he has never gotten any worse reaction than the lump from that shot.

Mine have gotten the lump, and it gradually went away over the course of about 5 days.

She got her shot about an hour and a half ago...so far the sky has not fallen, she is running around as usual and barking out her window at the neighbor cat. It's cold but sunny here today so we took a nice long walk beforehand. The vet sent home some benadryl just in case but we waited at the clinic for about 15 min to be sure nothing happened. I'm glad this is done for another 3 years.  :scratch:

I will moist hot pack her neck if she starts to get a bump sounds like a few doxies here have gotten that.

Sounds good! Them Doxies are tough little dogs! Ceaser had a small bump, the vet said it was to be expected.. it was no big deal and soon was gone.

Nobody but the sainted Heidi-Angel ever had trubbos with shots around here.  I do have a vet now who will NOT let small dogs get more than one shot unless there is at least a week in between.  (And I don't either, so I REALLY like Dr. Irene Takata!)  She did Robinton's neuter, and has been the only vet my two have seen since they moved into their new headquarters in May.  Auntie Brenda (Mocha's mom, also takes Mocha and Lassie to her, as well.

Although I wish so many did get the lump it's good to know it's harmless. Hallie's neck is starting to swell a little so I am going to start hot packing it although it doestn' seem to be painful.

Hang on to that good vet Julia they are hard to come by! It is time for Hallie's vaccinations too (it's been over 3 years now) and I am planning to titer first and then if she needs any, will do it individually and about a month apart just to be safe.  Hallie has her every three week allergy shot in the mix too. Remember the good old days when vaccinations didn't seem like a scary thing!!!
