What I do when my Hoomans are away: howl, cry, whine, den lay down and look pathetic.  I do dat eberytime my mama leaves, eben if someone else is home wif me.   (I’m teaching Porky dis, so he can join in!)

Story about me that my Hoomans would like to share:  Bandit has had two families in his lifetime.   Even though we rescued Bandit, we are fortunate enough to know his background very well so we can better understand his fears and behaviors.

Bandit was born at a breeder’s home in 1999 or 2000 (I don’t  know for sure.) He was then sold to a loving family of 4.  The family bought Bandit for their youngest son who had been wanting a dog.    Bandit’s first year was a happy.  When Bandit was two the dad of he family had become alcoholic, abusive, and addicted to drugs.  His wife tried to fix things for a while and eventually gave into the drugs herself.   The two boys  tried their best to take care of the house and keep their pets safe.   Eventually, the family decided to move away.  The dad in the family told the little boys they would have to leave their dog and four cats behind.   After crying for days, the youngest boy decided that he would hide a bag of food under the bed for his pets.   Also he placed a bowl under a leaky faucet in the bathroom, so they would have drinking water.   Then the family just left.

Bandit layed in his bed with his cats and tried to survive.   Once the family arrived at their new home, the youngest boy snuck out of the house and used a pay phone to call a lady in our town.  He was crying so hard she could barely understand what he was trying to tell her.   He told her that they had left behind all their pets, and it had been two weeks.  He just wanted to know that his Bandito was safe.

She immediately called the police and went over to check.   What they found was horrific.  Bandit was lying in his bed with all his toys and was protecting one of the cats.   Only he and one cat had survived.    He was very malnourished and thin.    The lady told the police she would take Bandit home.    She then called my mom and asked if we could take him.

When Bandit first came to our home he was very frightenend and quiet.   He was not able to trust anyone.   The only person he would allow to touch him was me,  (Porky’s mom).   So, I picked him up and took him into my room.   We stayed in there for three days before he was brave enough to come out with me.   He was so scared, he wouldn’t even grunt or make a sound.   He grieved the loss of his cats.   He would cry without making a noise because he was afraid he would be beaten if he did.   I remember one night I cried with him, he was shaking so much.   I wrapped him up in his blanket from his first home and sat in the rocking chair.  We rocked all night long.

The next day, Bandit ventured out of my room and got lots of treats.  Every new room he explored he got a treat.   By the end of the second week, he was comfortable following me around the house and starting to communicate by grunting.  We took him to the vet to do blood tests, etc… and everything came out fine.    We were lucky enough to find the vet that had treated him since birth so we were able to find out his bark day.

Slowly, Bandit became more comfortable and more accepting of the other people in our home.   He would still sleep with me at night, but during the day he would sit with my mom.    I still remember the first day he barked.  We had a bark party.   We kept encouraging him to bark and giving him treats when he did.   Now, we can’t get him quiet.

Bandit is the sweetest little dog in the whole world!!   He still suffers with a lot of fear and distrust of humans.   He has some aggression issues with strangers, some problems with submissive wetting, but he is a totally different dog now.   We are patient with him and try to help him with his fears.

Story that I want to share about my Hoomans: I like living here and when Porky’s mama got married, I was berry sad and had to go visit her a lot until I decided it was okay to sleep wif my mama.   I am glad dey let me keep my toys from my first family even though dey were dirty and stinky.  I like how dey are patient wif me and neber get mad when I accidentally pee on dem or da furniture.   I’m glad dey helped me find my voice and didn’t let me stay quiet foreber.

Handle every "Situation" like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
tinkle on it and walk away.

Just when I think the whole world is going to H**l in a handbasket, I hear stories like this, and once again, I can believe in humans.

You are one gorgeous boy, and am glad you found such a good home.
