One of my wieners lost a tooth.  We are currently trying to figure out which dog the tooth belongs to.  Sadie is 2 and Loui is 3.  Isn't that a little too old to be losing baby teeth?

If the tooth is broken, does it need to be fixed?  Do dogs get crowns and fillings just like people?   :thinik:

We had both of them eat a snack to see if they are showing any sign of a toothache - nothing.

I just wanted to check with y'all before I take both dogs to the vet and spend big $ on something that may not be necessary.

Thanks,

yeah 2-3 is a little old to loose baby teeth but it does happen. They get kinda impacted and trap food against the adult tooth, not good, may have to have baby teeth pulled. Which isn't a big deal but the dog will have to be anethetised

Can you post a photo of the tooth?

if you want to check the dogs teeth you'll have to put a finger in their mouth and hold their toungue down, they usually automaticly open their mouths when you do this. Put your thumb in to hold the tongue down and hold their bottom jaw with your fore finger.

This works better with two people and a flash light. One to hold the dog and light in your hand with the dogs jaw in your other. Check in sections, bottom left, bottom right, top left, top right. may wanna give the dog a break in bewteen sections depending on how much resistance they put up.

And at 2-3 years old it's probably time for them to go in for a dental anyway, considering that these dogs live to 17-18 years old.

If it's a broken tooth, most likely they'll pull it. It's just depends on a few different factors.

You can get them crowned...........depends on where and how deep our pockets are. I'd check out both mouths as a tooth that is broken is very painful and sometimes you notice it if they favour one side of there mouth or they eat difrent to normal, that is how we detected Olivers tooth had broken.

I think it was Loui who broke a tooth.  Neither dog is showing signs of discomfort when eating or otherwise.

Just to be on the safe side, I scheduled a dental appointment for Loui next week.  They clean the teeth and if they find anything else wrong, like a broken tooth for example, they ix it right there and then.

Thanks everyone for your input.  :thumb:
