I just read an article on another board about the weights for Minis vs tweenies vs standards.  So what the heck is suitable for a tweenie that I thought was a mini but might be a standard??
Frank was adopted so I thought initially that he was a "mini"  then heard about minis being less than 10lbs or so (FOR REAL??).  He just weighed in at a little less than 19lbs (lost two from his last visit).  Vet never had any comments about his weight.  I think he looks "good" and still muscular, but wonder if I am biased...... we went through a "porky" phase from steroids  and immune suppressants (as seen in many of his pics) and then a sickly skinny phase while going through Chemo.  Now I just want a good healthy weight for him as I am trying to live in the "now".

Delilah on the other hand is doing a good slow & steady job and has lost 10% of her bodywweight so far.....

Any feedback would be great
Thanks!

Patches is a tweenie she now weighs 12.9 # down from 15# last winter I think she needs to loose a little more because you cannot feel her ribs. She thinks she is starving of course.

I am kinda in the same boat as you.  Thought Zoe was a mini....then was told she was a tweenie.  She tips the scales at 19.5.  Vet said she looks good; she is muscular also.  She weighed a little more than that when she had her back problem.  Although she used to scale the side of our above ground pool and run around the rim and jump into the water.  I think climbing the pool was what messed up her back, she was so fast at it.  We couldn't catch her fast enuff....haha.....So I just feel if she is happy and doesn't gain any more weight and her belly isn't rubbing the ground....heck...I think it's alright the way she is.

MY :2cents:

Since we are dealing with a breed that can range in weight/size from six pounds to 32+ pounds, there is only one way to tell if whether your pupper is a mini, tweenie, or standard.

If your dog is the proper size for its build - you look down from above and see a nice hourglass shape - then your dog is at a healthy weight for its bone size. THAT IS GOOD!

If your dog has straight sides from front legs to back legs, it is a little overweight.  That is NOT GOOD!

if you dog EXPANDS at its middle, it's overweight.  That is BAD!

I your dog looks like an Ethiopian famine victim, that is BAD!

Once your dog gets to GOOD, the weight determines if it is a mini or a standard.  Here are the AKC standards:

Size, Proportion, Substance
Bred and shown in two sizes, standard and miniature; miniatures are not a separate classification but compete in a class division for "11 pounds and under at 12 months of age and older." Weight of the standard size is usually between 16 and 32 pounds.

"Tweenies" refers to puppers bigger than 11 pounds, but smaller than 16 pounds.  It only matters because they are underweight for the standard and too big to show in the "mini" division and they wouldn't do well in a show ring.

So get your pupper(s) to the GOOD size, weigh in, and let the chips fall where they may!

IN Australia it is not done on weight, but i agree with what you all are saying wen we got Oliver he was thin, to thin but thats how the breeders want them. He has got the nice hour glass figure, and Amy well anything can be happening under all that hair.

Ahem, excuse me bitte.  I do beg your pardon . . .

When one is speaking of someone else's, uh, private parts, one should endeavor to spell ze nomenclature correctly.  It's WIENER.

"Weiner" is German for either cry-baby or wine drinker.  It's pronounced like ze English "whine."

"Wiener" is either a hopelessly adorable little dog or something from Vienna, Austria.

Danke schön.

I have pictures-I have what I call the three bears.  Too skinny, too chubby, and just right  :2funny:  My foster falls under the genuinely fat category too, so this might help!

Winston (before Solid Gold fattened him up)-TOO SKINNY

Murphy-JUST RIGHT

Reilly-JUST A LITTLE CHUBBY, BUT NOT YET REALLY OVERWEIGHT

Doc-SOLIDLY OVERWEIGHT

Thanks everyone for the feedback... especially the pictures of those pretty babies and the drawings from Auntie Karen!
See, I always considered Franky  a tweenie because of his little pointy feet and Delilah a standard due to her large frame and big bear paws.
I tried to do a drawing of their feeties that went something like this... hmm do they have four toes or five.....think its four... D'oh forgot the dew claws.. OK....arrgh dew claws on the wrong side of the foot....nosey office neighboor "why are you drawing mutant four leaf clovers?"...OK so how do I scan this thing?  Oh no thats not the scanner, its a shredder...I quit!!!

So I think Frank is good... has a nice tuck and big muscular thighs, but a little junk in the trunk.  Delilah finally has ribs that can be felt!!!   Also found out when DH gives the evening meal (if I work late) he gives a heaping serving!!   So, I;ve put a stop to that and am adding more green beans and lettuce.

Thanks Papbouv, I have heard of black salve as an experimental treatment thats had some success particularly in skin cancers.  We went the route of surgeries and chemo and he's been in full remission since December.  He gets a full bloodwork panel and urinalysis every 3 to six months and as of last week he's still "CLEAN"! :hello2:  I'm trying to be sure that he's at a good weight to keep him happy and healthy... which in turns makes ME happy & healthy
