Hi everyone!  At five months old, my sweet little puppy qualifies as an official "Tweenie".  He broke 11 pounds!  So, I'm thinking he's got a good chance of growing into a standard.  Meanwhile, he's discovered that puppies come from Mommy's arm, so it's getting to be time for that trip to the vet-vet.  And tonight I figured out for sure that I'm completely off the wall.  We're having a nasty heatwave here in New England, and no air conditioning.  I have my big fans for human use, but when Pfeffie's in his canvas crate (the kind that fold up, sort of a cross between a tent and a playpen), it gets awfully stuffy in there.  So I set him up with his own little fan, a little table fan I used to use for my computer desk!  Originally I figured it was a little on the overkill side, since dogs cool themselves with water and panting, but he's curled up, happy as can be, so I guess it really IS that good an idea! So, the little fella's well on the road to being hopelessly spoiled rotten!

Oooooh, I bet he's just the smoochiest!  Now that humpin' the arm that feeds ya stuff....Pfeffie, no, no!  Snip!  Snip!  I bet he's sure a lot of fun!

It's good to hear that your baby is doing so good.  I don't know on the overkill (with the fan).  I figure if I'm hot they gotta be too.
Keep cool.

Handle every "Situation" like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
tinkle on it and walk away.

It definitely isn't overkill! Penny has a heating pad in her house outside in winter :doah:!

Let me tell you it's 97 degrees here in Bawlmer, and Guinness is laying IN THE SUN baking to a nice toasty brown.  He FINALLY is warm.  He shivers all the time!

All the other puppers are hiding out in the shade!

One can pant only so hard the fan is a great idea good rule of thumb if you are hot the dog is hot since they cannot sweat very much only though their feet a tiny bit they can over heat and die. I do not care how much they pant or drink water hot is hot plus they have fur on.Papbouv

Roberta

I actually wet them down with a towel and sometimes take them in the shower, tepid. that helps to cool.

Fill a few plastic milk jugs with water and freeze them, put one in the kennel with him. It'll act as a quasi air conditioner, especially if you have that fan blowing on it.

and Ice cubes in the water bowl for sure

Oh Pfeffie...you are sooo adorable.....of course having two tweenies myself.....I just love them to death!!!  Definitely not overkill on the fan.  I agree with everyone else, if you are hot, they gotta be hot....but anyway....isn't that why we have our babies....to spoil them that is!!!  ps: Mine love the ice cubes in their water

It's great to know my silly idea is also a good one!  My sister thinks I'm nuts (in a good way!) becasue we have the playpen, a real doogie car seat set up in the back, and an assortment of leashes (including Strudel's old retractable!), but this guy's my little boy, and it's SO much fun watching him grow up!  It's really amazing.  At first, I'd say "Want to go for a walk?  On your leash?!" and he'd be interested, but the phrase really didn't have much significance.  Now he's got it down, so the head tilts one way with that hopeful dog look when I say "Walk", the other way when I say "leash", and then he goes bounding over to the door, just like any other dog.  I have to admit, he's doing really terrible in school -- to him, "heel" means go dashing around any which way, looking too cute for words but making Mommy want to hide ... he's okay with the rest of the basics, but I don't know if he'll ever get heel down!  Also, in true dachsie fashion, he obeys most commands when it's most convenient -- so, even a simple "watch me" is meaningless when there's ants to be hunted!
