she's got a back owie.  The vet seemed to think it was muscular, but impacting the disc region.  I took her in yesterday morning and she looked better after Metacam and rest last night but she sure looks pale n' puny this morning.  I HATE having to go to work when my kidz are sick!    Thanks for the rays!!!

Oh Loki!! My heart always sinks when I hear of another one...I'm so sorry Les. Has she had back problems before? I am thinking she has had one or two??

I agree with Cheryl, if you aren't crating or confining her maybe it would be a good idea, at least for a week or so? Even though the vet thinks it's muscular (I always suspect disc first, which in itself can cause muscular spasms on top of it but is the root of the problem). Especially with the metacam she'll feel better and could aggravate things further if it is a disc herniating. Hopefully though it's not and either way I'm sure she'll be just fine in no time. Give her some hugs for us and keep us posted!

Oh, no! Poor Loki! At least it's just muscle and you caught it early. I bet it IS hard leaving her. I'm lucky - I work day shift and Ron works nights, so one of us is always home. Let us know how she does.

Leslie

waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Loki not bedder tonight.  Back to the vet who I think will prescribe also muscle relaxants and crate rest. DH will stay home with her tommorow.  Poor puppy yelped when I lifted her front paws up (I thought she WANTED to hop up on the ONE step up to the deck).  Came in from poopin' and sat down in the kitchen.  To top it off it rained on her and rain burns. Thanks for your continued  for Loki dawg.

Argh. I hate to hear that. Les it's much more likely to be disc than just muscle. I always worry when a vet passes it off as muscle when disc should be suspected first. I'd put her in a crate right away and strictly leave her in there except to go out and potty and right back into the crate. She should get some meds on board asap too to get the inflammation down. Since she's had metacam already she can't have pred or other steroids without being off meds for 48 hours so I'd think to keep going with the metacam.  I hope I don't sound like  know it all or more than your vet but I've seen too many doxies hurt themselves badly by not being crated, Hallie's first neuro told me to let her run around which was the worst possible thing I could have done. Many prayers for you and Loki!

This is NOT the news I meant when I said to keep us posted!!! LOL! I hope the muscle relaxants do the trick for her. At least DH will be home with her tomorrow. Loki...you get lots of sleep, little girl, so your little back will feel better.

Leslie

Absolutley agree.  Muscle relaxants and strict crate rest!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think his experieince might be slanted because he stated that his dog--who lived to be 17--had back problems off and on and he repeatly x-rayed her. Never showed any evidence of disk disease. So he might be thinking exactly that--well, my dawg never had a disc problem.   Still, he when I commented that she seemed better than she was a early in the am, he sed: "Never be afraid to bring them in ever these things are tricky."

I am taking her in tonight ot be re-evaluated as she is still not showing any nuero signs.  BUT!  You KNOW they mask their symptoms. Should I get an MRI if suggested?  It would give definitive answers.

Poop.  It's the not knowing (in any sitauation) that sets yer teeth on edge.  Thanks for the input.  Will keep all of the info you guys continue to provide in my brain.  The disk surgeon is about an hour and half away, and we have discussed the costs, etc.  She also has a heart murmer, which needs to be factored in as a risk factor.  That will surely need to be evaluated before any surgery.  (I guess we try to deny that as DH's kitty lived to be 18 with a murmer--so we are doing exactly what doctor is doing--not basing our decisions on current FACT,  but on our own past experiences.)  Of course, you always want to believe in the easy way.

Oh no - I had so hoped she would be better.   Gotta have more meds and no activity - crate rest for sure.  Sending rays in full force - please let us know as soon as you get back -

From my experience with Gretchen, I don't think an MRI is indicated unless they are showing nuero signs. As the others have said, crate rest, Metacam and muscle relaxer (I'm guessing he'll put her on Robaxin) should work for her. Another thing that seems to help Gretch (when her back is acting up) is a heating pad. Ron puts her in the recliner with him, with the heating pad on her. Just be careful she doesn't get burned. THEN the hard part is keeping her still when she's feeling better. Don't give in to her! You're right about considering her heart murmur regarding surgery. As long as she's not showing nuero signs, you still have a chance of preventing her requiring surgery. Concentrate on that, for now. I know it's easier said than done. The muscle relaxers will make her sleepy. Is there any way you can get her some tonight? I'm so sorry this is happening  to  you guys! Hang in there! D'OH! Just re-read your post and see you're taking her to the vet tonight - muscle relaxer will be working soon.

That's what the vet said--a heating pad!  Gave her the muscle relaxers (could I have a few, too, Dr.?)  And still no neuro symptoms tonight, either.  and into the crate for the next 5 days.  (note to self: stock up on beef bones)  I can only HOPE the meds will make ger sleepy

Good grief.  Am so burned out by the poor pooper, what's happening in our neighborhood, (long story) and lack of sleep I totally snapped at DH.  (Not that he didn't deserve it--like I always say, sometimes it's "dearheart" and sometimes it's the other thing.)

Gonna get me store boughten likker.

Thanks you guys, you ALWAYS make me feel better when the pups--or me--are feelin' punk.  Thanks again!

Leslie, major rays headed your way to you, hubby, and Loki Dawg......You are doing what is right and what is best!!!  Kongs with peanut butter work wonders too   Hang in there :comfort: :comfort: Conservative treatments do work :thumb:  Hoping for better updates from now on   ps:  If you feel more comfortable with keeping her on crate rest more than five days, then do so.  Crate rest never hurts but always helps!
