Some of you know me, usually I just lurk. I have been doing rescue work for quite a few years.  I've seen some terrible things and also have witnessed some really happy endings. Right now I am working with Metroport Humane Society out of Roanoke, Texas.

There is a private, high-kill shelter in Roanoke that we try to visit weekly. We can frequently pull purebred dogs and get them to their respective rescue groups. I try to pull dogs I think are highly adoptable that I can get vetted easily, foster, adopt to a great home, and then bring another into my home. Recently I have fostered a dorkie (dachshund/yorkie), a min pin, a black lab, and I currently have a lab/border collie mix (named Luna - short for Lunatic, but that is another story entirely).

Last week when my friend, Tammy, and I were at the shelter the paperwork hanging on the outside of one of the runs said the run contained a stray dapple doxie. After peering in seeing nothing, and actually walking away, I returned to the run for another look. There, huddled in the very back of the run was an extremely small and thin little doxie girl. I entered the run and as I approached this little waif I was greeted with a low growl and a show of doxie teeth. I sat down a few feet from her and begin offering her hotdog bits. Again the growl and teeth. I tried for about 20 minutes to lure her to me. She would have none of that. It probably did not help that there was a huge great dane leering at us over the top of the concrete wall that seperates the runs from one another. I had to leave her that day. She was scheduled to be put down Sunday (yesterday) because of her behavior. I just could not get her out of my mind. Tammy called the shelter and was able to get a stay on her execution if we would come back Monday (today) and take her. So the plan is for Tammy and I to spring her from jail today. She will be coming back to my house and we will take it from there. I have no idea whether or not her behavior can be turned around. I want to be realistic. But my promise to her is that I will try my hardest and if we ultimately fail and she has to be put down it will not be at that shelter by people who don't love her. Anyway if you could send rays and good thought to Jude, the doxie-girl (I am naming her Jude after Saint Jude, the patron saint of desperate situations and hopeless causes).

Thanks
Janet

I'm a believer in the St. Jude prayer,  he has never disappointed me,  Prayers for this little girl   . She might just be scared being in that horrible place.  Its a great name for her.  What I don't understand is,  why the Great Dane is in the shelter there? Why they don't contact a Great Dane rescue. Most shelters contact rescues now. To save the dane maybe you can contact a rescue in your area for him.

Great Dane rescue was our first thought. Turns out the Dane belongs to one of the shelter workers who left him there for the weekend while the worker was out of town

Thanks for checking on the great dane. Also many prayers for the little doxie   . I'm sure a lot of it is that she is just scared and doesn't know what is going on.

Bless you for trying!  And of course Jude gets Pfeffie's and my rays!  I looked  into adopting a rescue dachsie, and it's a serious business!  I found the most adoptable ones got kept by the foster homes (sigh), and when dogs similar to Jude get transported up north by some of our local shelters, they get adopted before I could get to the shelter to have a look!  The ones most available were either older than I was prepared to work with, or had issues that I don't have the resources to address right now.  I had an awful experience with a Lhasa Apso -  the poor little thing was so hostile that most people agreed he should never have been made available for adoption in the first place. If I'd had the time and experience to give the fella what he needs, that would have been a good thing.  He's at a no-kill shelter, and I pray someone will be able to give him what I couldn't -- I was his 5th family, too!  Anyway, best of luck with little Jude, and keep us posted!

Handle every "Situation" like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
tinkle on it and walk away.

Mega-Rays coming your way from Florida.  My Toby-Man is a testament to what can happen with lots of good food, necessary medical care and a whole lot of love.  Give that sweet girl a belly rub from me when she will let you.....which I suspect will be very soon!  God bless you for helping her!!!!!

If you have access to iTunes podcasts, there's one Dog Whisperer where Cesar calmed and gentled a viscious mastiff belonging to Patti LaBelle.  He did it by standing near the cage with no eye contact, no voice and no touch.  As the dog calmed down and became used to him, Cesar gradually established, through calm assertive action - actually it was more like non-action - that he was in control and that the dog had nothing to fear from him.  Eventually he got to open the kennel gate, walk inside and sit down next to the mastiff.

Don't reinforce her anxiety and fear, just stay calm and ignore her until she's calm herself.  It CAN be done!!  Good for you and Good for HER!!!! :headbang:
