Hi, Dachsie Lovers~

I am just stopping in to share something that may save your dachshund's life. We had a close call with Lilah and our cautionary tale may help prevent something similar for your wiener!

You can read the full story on my blog http://www.juliarogershamrick.com/weblog/index.php?op=ViewArticle&articleId=380&blogId=1, but suffice to say that you must be ultra vigilant that your dog does not consume xylitol in any form--not sugar-free gum, or dietetic cookies, or any kind of product made with xylitol!

It can cost you a lot of money--or something much more precious. I am grateful beyond words to have Lilah with us tonight!

Love to all,

Julia

Thanks for the heads up!!!   I was not aware of xylitol being such a danger for our fur babies.  So glad Lilah is doing OK and will keep fingers and toes crossed for her continued good reports.   :xfinger:    :xfinger:

Handle every "Situation" like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
tinkle on it and walk away.

Thanks so much, Darcel.

That's just the thing--people aren't very aware of this. I'm just glad I was! And so thankful I decided to call poison control even though I couldn't imagine such a small amount being dangerous.

I'm not sure how to get more recognition for this problem, but I'm going to do what I can to get the word out!

Yeah that's nasty stuff and it doesn't take much. I'm surprised to hear not more people know about this. Good thing you got Lilah in fast! So glad she is OK, even if your pocket book isn't. Scary!!!

Oh my gosh - I was so scared while reading the story.  I have never even heard how bad this was.  Thank heavens you took action and didn't wait to see what MAY have happened.   Thanks for sharing and it is good to hear about the kids.  I LOVE the "say cheese" picture - LOL !!!!!   Smoochies to both Roly and Lilah !!!!

Awwww!!  They are both so cute!!!!  Thanks for shareing your story.  We had an emergency with Ozzy in December that involved an overnight stay and intravenous medications.  The total bill was over $900.00 - YIKES!  We are now looking at pet insurance offered through the company both my and my hubby work for.  They yearly premiums for the highest coverage available would be only one-third of the >$900 bill.

Thanks, y'all. Lilah is seeming perfectly normal this morning, though a little perplexed at why I'm so focused on her!

Now I'm a bit paranoid--you should have heard me last night when my stepdaughters were here. I was grilling them about their backpacks and did they have gum in them.

Please pass the word about the dangers of xylitol to your other dog-loving friends! Lots of people like me who are sugar sensitive have started using it for baking, etc., and might share their food with their dog.

Here is a link to a copy of the email I had received that clued me in about xylitol (it is a hoax debunking site, but verifies that this is true):

Note that it was a dachshund that was the subject! A 24-lb dachshund--now that's quite a bundle of love! LOL!
