My mom is going in for her thyroid uptake test tomorrow.  What happens is they insert radioactive iodine into her bloodstream and then she will go stay at my sister's house in town for 6 hours and return to the hospital.  Then they look and see where the iodine went.  It is to test the function of her thyroid and also to check and see how far thyroid cancer has spread.   I researched it because my mom wasn't giving me very many details about it but seemed really nervous.

In doing my research I read that your doctor will ask you to eat a low-iodine diet for two weeks prior to the proceedure especially if tey are checking for cancer.  That freaked me out since I know they told my mom no salt, chocolate, etc...for two weeks.     So...I called her and she said, that is what they are checking to see is if she has cancer!!!   That scares me so much.   I hope we find out the results right away after she waits the 6 hours.  She told me she didn't tell "us kids" because she didn't want us to get upset.   So  please send mega rays tomorrow that they find NOTHING wrong.

I have to work all day tomorrow so hopefully that will keep my mind off of my mom for a few hours.  I have to paste on my fake smile and peppy attitude tomorrow, maybe that will help me feel better.  :dontknow:

Rays coming to you and your mom.  I hope everything turns out just fine.  In terms of "not worrying the kids", my mom does the same thing.  It must be a mom thing.

I understand the fear that you're going through.  Around this time last year, my mom called to tell me she just got confirmed reports back that she had breast cancer.  It was found on a routine mammogram, so they caught it very early.  She went through radiation and is doing very well.

I'll keep you and your mom in my prayers.

Hang in there....we're here for you! :comfort:

I will be praying for her too. I have been through this with too many in my immediate family, it's really terrifying. But remember, that the chances are better she doesn't have it than she does and even if she does, many thyroid cancers are VERY curable. Let us know.

My mom went in yesterday at 1 to have them check and see where the iodine went.  The didn't tell her anything but it only took 10 minutes for them to check.  Then she was supposed to go in again this morning and have them check again.  She won't find out the results until next week sometime.  So...I'm hoping it all turned out okay.  :xfinger:   Thanks to everyone for the rays and prayers!!     It means a lot to us.   She seems pretty upbeat about it all so that should really help.   I'll keep everyone posted as soon as we find out more about it.  Thanks again!

That is good news that it only took 10 minutes. I am sure everything will turn out ok. I am still praying for her. Thanks for giving the update. I have been thinking about you guys all day!!

As you are waiting on your mom results, I'll tell you what they told me when I had my uptake test done. They said they were mainly looking for "hot spots". These could be cancer, but most likely were over-productive nodules in the thyroid gland. I had been hyperthryoid for awhile, so my doctor was having the test done after the nodules showed up on an ultrasound. She wasn't at all concerned with it being cancerous, because it is a rare cancer and if it does occur is completely treatable. When the uptake showed which nodules were real "hot spots" there was one that was larger than the others. I saw an ENT who I thought would do a needle biopsy. He chose to remove that side of the thyroid along with the middle section and even a small part of the other side. That way all the nodules were removed, and as he told me, even if it were cancerous, the problem would be taken care of.
I'm telling you all of this to let you know that one reason your mom may have said very little is because the doctors really do not worry much about thyroid cancer. Unless they think it has really advanced outside the gland itself, they are very nonchalant about it. I can honestly say that it is one time I didn't let the cancer part worry me at all. Having had a scare or two before, that is surprising, but I knew that there was little danger, so I didn't worry. I hope this helps as you wait the next couple of days.

Thanks Teresa!! That was so sweet of you!!!    :comfort:  I found out my mom's results after I got off work tonight.  The doctors told her there was absolutely nothing wrong with her thyroid.  She respnded, "I told you so...now are you going to pay the bill?"   :2funny:  Of course she was kidding.

Teresa

I'm so glad she was okay. I love that response!!
