Ok, my husband and I are thinking about moving from our townhouse we rent to another house that would be cheaper, better landlord, ect....

We found an ad in the paper for a 2 bedroom home for rent and allows pets.   The landlord is VERY nice we talked to them on the phone for a hour asking questions about the house.   She said it is a smaller two bedroom house.  The last renters completely "trashed" the house.  But, all the carpet is being pulled up and replaced. It has no basement, which is a big deal when you live in Nebraska.  It has a large, fenced in yard.  BIG BONUS!!   Since itsin the country, no noisy neighbors!   :meme:  It would cost $450 a month to live there.   It is 6 miles from town, not too far.

Here's the downside we know about it so far.  It is propane heat, not electric, which can cost $300/400 every 2-3 months.  So..I guess it would average out to about $100-200 a month. Kinda pricey.   It is most likely smaller than where we are now.   Its in an area where there are a lot of rattlesnakes and coyotes, and other scary things.

Our house we live in now, is two bedroom townhouse, with an upstairs, main floor and basement.   The kitchen and guest room are very small.  The living room s average sized and the basement, we only use as a laundry room so size isn't a big deal.   I really like the space we have so things don't have to be cluttered.   We get free internet here and its electric heat.

Downsides of where we live now.:   Rude landlady, LOUD neighbors, no privacy, no yard, costs $625 a month.  Drafty doors, broken front door, easy to break in, in town, so there are lots of cars speeding by.

Let me know which one you would choose.  We haven't looked at the other place...yet, but plan to.  I'm really having a hard time deciding.  The townhouse will be house 1, and the new place will be house 2.  Please tell me what you would pick.  Thanks for your help!

I would say stay with house 1 until another one comes along. House 2 doesn't have a basement! And I am a firm believer in one of those in Nebraska! Not to mention it sounds like it would cost more with the fact you would be spending that much in propane and the getting the internet on top of that.  After the landlady fixed the sliding door maybe she will be more willing to fix the other broken door. And if you talked to her about weather proofing the windows would she let you take some of that off of rent? I know Porkey would love the yard but I would be afraid everytime there was a storm!! But that is just me.

I was sitting here trying to figure out why a basement was important in Nebraska and then it hit me- Tornados!! It just took a few minutes. If the basement weren't an issue, you might balance out the money with the cost of the propane, since the rent is less. Also, if it is one level, it is probably less expensive to heat. It would also depend on the windows and how airtight they are. You could always look at the house and see what you think. That may be enough to help you realize you are better off where you are right now for awhile.

The large fenced in yard sounds attractive, but the part about "an area where there are a lot of rattlesnakes and coyotes, and other scary things", would negate the yard for me! I would just end up putting my babies on leashes when they were out, so the yard would be pointless. And then there is the tornado/basement issue. I say wait for a better option, it might be just around the corner (time-wise that is, maybe geographically as well...)

I think you should stay where you are until something better comes along.  A basement iin Nebraska is a must!!  Plus we don't want any coyotes and rattlesnakes and other wild and crazy things to get into the yard and hurt our little Porky Pie!!!

Thanks for your input!  I agree with you about the basement.  It freaks me out when there is a bad storm, but knowing I live in a house with a basement kinda comforts me a bit.  And the snakes, um...no thanks!

We went out and just looked at the outside of the house today.  Both my hubby and I had an uneasy feeling about it when we pulled up. I think we'll keep looking for something else.     It was qute an old house, looked kinda rickety and dirty and dusty and ....well you get the point.  Positives about it???  Um.... :thinik:...It was recently re-roofed?    :dontknow:

We also took note that it is in a spot where tornadoes and BAD storms go through on a YEARLY basis.  Um...no thanks.   I can deal without that thanks.  Also, another kicker there was a snake hole by the front door!!

I would stay put until something better comes along, knowing how Doxie's like to hunt would most likely go after a snake.Would not have a chance with a coytee they are fast too.
Hang in there you will find something.Heck live in Oklahoma have clay soil most houses here do not have basements no hidy holes for Tornado's here.
