Willy, Alex and I went up to the family cabin on Friday.  My folks are up there and my sister was up from Homer.  On Saturday we were all down in dad's workshop doing stuff and talking.  Willy, bored as ever, was right at my feet bugging me to go do something fun.  At one point I said "where's Alex?"  And found him in a corner of the workshop munching on some D-Con.  I said "oh no, I have to go call the vet."  I called the closest one to the cabin but the vet on call was already on an emergency.  I called the next one and the gal said "YOU HAVE TO GET HIM TO THROW UP NOW!!!"  She asked me if we had any hydrogen peroxide and my mom said yes we did.  The gal at the vet office said to pour some down Alex's throat, and if he doesn't throw up within 5 minutes to give him another tablespoon.  If he still doesn't throw up then I was to call her back and she would direct me to an emergency vet.  So we had Alex out on the back steps and I got some peroxide in him.   Within about two minutes, he threw up.  It was turquoise, the color of the D-Con.  There were bits and pieces of D-Con in it as well.  We gave Alex a little more peroxide and he threw up a lot of turquoise bile.  The last batch was mostly white with a couple specks of D-Con, so we gave Alex just a little more peroxide to make sure it was all out of him.  He upchucked a few more times and we were confident we got it all out.  Then we thought we should do Willy as well, just in case.  Willy threw up his breakfast but nothing else.  We called the vet office back to tell them that it worked.  The doc on call said "good work!" and she said to keep an eye on Alex, especially after 48 hours which is how long it would take the D-Con damage to show up if it was going to.  Alex has been acting like his old self but hadn't pooped, so we've gone for a few short walks today.  He finally exploded and it appears that everthing is in good working order.  I was very impressed with how quickly the hydrogen peroxide worked, and will make sure I always have some on hand.  My dad felt pretty horrible for having the D-Con in his shop, he had seen a mouse a few days before and hadn't thought about the dogs getting into it.  We were very lucky we saw Alex eating it.  Close calls like this makes us all more aware and careful.

Glad you were able to get him to throw up but to be on the safe side when you get home I would inform the boys vet,I'm sure being the good Mom that you are you were going to anyway. You were lucky that you saw him eating it would be a bad way to go if you had not seen him eating it you would have been trying to figure out what was wrong with him. Dogs must know when it is a Holliday weekend no vets open they really try on those days more to get them self's in trouble.Thank goodness it turned out well.

Oh that is so scary!! Reminds me of last summer when Porky ate the moth bar!   I am so glad Alex is okay!!!   Did the peroxide make his tummy hurt?  Porky had a tummy ache for two days after he got the peroxide.  However, he also got his tummy pumped at the vet's office after the peroxide.  So that's probably what did it.  I'm glad everything turned out ok.  Hope Alex shows no signs of being effected from the D-con at all.  We're  that everything will stay okay.

OMG you're not kidding about another 5 years off your life.  Quick action saves the day.  But how in the WORLD did you get it down his throat?

The little turkey! (Although, I should talk, according to my mother, I was aces at finding --and eating--those little poison roach "cookies".  Apparently, after she got rid of them all at our house, whenever she took us kids visiting to other folks' homes, I would scout around until I found THEIRS, too.)

That would explain the extra 4 legs....

Geesh Patty!!!  I can just imagine what you must have gone through!  That hydrogen peroxide is it the same ordinary peroxide that one can use to bleach your hair too?  That same stuff?
My best buddies

papbouv

The Hydrogen Peroxide in question is the medical peroxide in the brown bottle I do not think it is the same Peroxide you put on hair to bleach hair I would only use the medical Peroxide not the hair kind.I would think the hair kind would be a poison in itself then you would have more problems.

I don't think its the stuff that bleaches hair.  The peroxide I used was the 3% solution.  Good point to bring up though.

Thank goodness you acted so quickly!!  Glad that Alex is OK.  My sister's beagle did the same thing and the vet induced vomiting as well as gave her vitamin K shots.
