My folks said they thought the whole fair was inside.  Hello?  How can that be?  I hear the the Puyallup fair is one of the biggest in the nation.  I am going to come and "do" the Puyallup fair one of these years.  I wanted to see the Iowa state fair, after seeing the movie State Fair, I just love that movie.  But Washington is almost in my backyard and easier to get to.  I know my way around.
My dad said the Puyallup fair was all indoors because its practically impossible to get a day without rain in western Washington.   :2funny:   We used to live there, you know, and my dad was a forester.  What a great place to be a forester, huh?
Dan and I have our sites set on retirement, he in three years and me in seven.  Ugh!  I have to figure out a way to retire earlier, thats for sure.  I plan to do all the things I've been just dreaming about, like seeing some of the state or county fairs in the areas of the USA that I love.

LOL well I had to think about that for a minute but your Dad is pretty much right! Everything is inside big buildings (not one big building though) or in tents or EZ Ups or little shack things for the smaller stuff. I guess that makes sense because the fairgrounds are used all year long for many things, so would need to be under cover. Hallie and I go up there a lot, there are 2 major dog shows there, many horse shows, art show, etc that we attend plus lots of other events during the year that we dont' go to. We always get at least a couple days of rain during the 3 weeks it is going. Our local fair is still going on right now and we have had rain on and off for 3 days. It's quite nice though, cool about 66 which is good for the animals. Very dark and cloudy (but I have to admit, that is my most favorite weather, really dark, cloudy, stormy, windy and about 65 degrees is PERFECT  :thumb:). I hate cold.

Put Puyallup on your retirement list! I'll go with you it would be super fun!!!!

Our fair is mostly indoors too, lots of buildings, temporary and permanent, and they also use the fairgrounds for stuff throughout the year.  We would have a blast going to the fair together, especially if Hallie is along in her stroller.  I would love to meet her.  We can't take dogs to our fair unless they are service dogs.
I enjoy stormy weather, too, like a real snowy day, as long as I am at home and not stuck in Anchorage or in traffic.  I like to go out walking in it.  I enjoy the cold in the winter, but rather it stayed above zero for our horses.  65 is about right for the summer.  I couldn't imagine living in a hot place, would have to expose too much body.  Yep, I live in the right place!  A jeans and sweaters sort of place.

Ummm.....are you guys talking about the "Pallyoop" fair? 'Cause that's how we say it in Texas. Just wondering.

We can't take dogs into our fairs either but Hallie is usually doing obedience demos or competing so once we are in, we just sneak her into the stroller and do the fair. :) She's so quiet no one ever says anything. One guy in a booth selling dog stuff once said "You must have your little one in there" he wasn't much interested until he saw it was of the dog variety. It would be so fun if you could make it to the Pallyoop Fair some year! :)

LOL Delia I think they should rename the town! Your pronounciation is way more fun (and easier to say!)  :thumb:

I'll never forget that day, when Delia was acting as navigator with the map, and said we were nearing the town of Pallyoop.  Well, thats much easier to say than Puyallup.  I mean, how do you pronounce a word that starts with "puy"???

Dee Dee and Hallie

LOL yep you were the one who caught that, I did hear what she had said but didn't recognize it as "Puyallup" so Delia would have missed out on all these years of teasing!

I saw a license plate where the letters were "PUY" once and I got to thinking, PUY is one word (if you can call it that) that is totally impossible to pronounce! Try it! My neice tried but failed miserably.

Hey, and BTW I was at the Puuliyap Fair in 1986!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  My (then) boyfriend wanted to move to Seattle, where his brother lived.  We vacationed out there a few times and saw a bunch of sights.
I will never forget our hosts the first year telling us:  "Too bad the mountian (Mt. Rainer) is not 'out'." (meaning you can't see it because of the fine Seattle frizzle. --fog and drizzle--And we were thinking BFD, right?  Until the LAST day of our vacation and the mountain came out (and it's 100 miles from Seattle, folks) and it's the biggest honkin' thing we had ever seen on the planet except for mebbe an ocean.   We could only suck in our breath and say "wow" in an awe-inspired tone.

Anyhoo, boyfriend DID move to Seattle, and I did ot  :verdict:   :verdict:   :verdict:
But then, I guess I would not have met my DH.

LOL Les, when Noel was out here she had learned the pacific NW expression "the mountain is out today" and "the mountain is not out today" . We say it without thinking. This area is wonderful in the spring, summer and fall but the winters do suck. Your DH would love it here though for the art ref photos, we have rain forests, ocean, mountains, desert...

Lets see....in 1986 I would have been an hour and a half from you when you were in Seattle! (and an hour from Pallyoop!)

Patty I wouldn't want to live where it's real hot either but I also couldn't stand the snow and cold. I think it's gorgeous but Hallie and I are the outdoorsy type and take a good walk every day, we both love it and I think it's so important to keep back muscles strong and weight down. We can't walk when it's snowy or icy and her ramp gets so slick when it's frozen (luckily not that often) I have to carry her down her ramp to get to the yard to go potty (in her covered winter potty area) and I am afraid of falling on my butt and both of us going down LOL. And when it's wet we can't walk even when it stops raining because the ground is still soaked so she splashes water up underneath her and gets drenched regardless. I love it when it's dry and about lower to mid 60s and overcast, I love wind too! I don't mind our hotter days of summer either because at least then we can walk later in the evening without getting too hot.

All in all though I would never leave here I'll brave out the winters (which really are very mild compared to some) to get the great spring, summer and fall. My main winter complaint is rain!

DD, Western Washington is very beautiful and mild.  When I spent 6 months there in 1978 or so, I just loved the feel of the place.  Even those foggy mornings when my dad and I would head out to my property to clear some brush (Vine Maple, oh geez, like a jungle) it was great, I just loved it.  Someday I will have a little cottage on the coast, or at least rent one during January and February, by then our Alaska winter is getting old, its nice to come back from a vacation and have it almost be spring.
