Brekke is named for the literary character - a dragonrider - in Anne McCaffrey's book, "Dragonquest".
(I always named my furkids after literary characters.)  Fritz (nick for Friedrich) von Trapp, Heidi from the Johanna Spyri book, Gretl from "Hansel and Gretel" but I changed the spelling, Siglen from the Anne McCaffrey book, "The Rowan", and Sorcha from the Anne McCaffrey book, "Dragons Dawn".  It's tradition!
owned and operated by Mirrim, Lessa, and Torene, also forever by angels Friedrich, Heidi, Gretl, Siglen, Sorcha, Brekke, Rowan, Robinton, and Bastian.

under GOOGLE:"Loki, the Norse 'Trickster' god, has been represented as an evil, scheming character, who was even considered by early Christians to be another face of the Devil"

enough said.

Zuzu, of course is named for the character in "It's a Wonderful Life", who in turn was nicknamed for the old timey ginger snap cookie.

So, as I always say, you should name yer new puppy CAREFULLY  or you may get what you asked for.

ll my puppers came with their names;

Guinness - for the beer

Merlin and Beau - courtesy of Leslie and Jim Ingram of Almost Home Dachshund Rescue Society (Beau is, of course, the famous Dr. Beau Leaky.  He claims to be named after Dr. Louis Leaky, the anthropologist, but the truth is: he IS leaky!)

Roscoe came into rescue from a family already named.

Willy and Alex were named after my dad William Alexander.  My poor dad had 5 daughters, then 5 granddaughters, finally one grandson and then another granddaughter.  Since I was the only daughter who didn't have kids, I figured I should name "my boys" after my father.
They are registered as William the Conquerer and Alexander the Great.

Both Sam and Eddie were named when I adopted  them.  But Ms Snickers kitty was originally named Skeeter, but it reminded me of the character in Mama's family so I changed it and since we had SullyAngel she HAD to be Michaela.  We then started calling her Micky, then Nicky and finally Snickers or Snickerdoodle.

David C.

I only got to name one of my dogs...Rudy.   The first dachshund I ever met was a b/t named Ruby who belonged to a friend of mine.   Had Rudy been a girl, he would have been a Ruby.   But, Rudy wasn't the only name I was considering.   I considered "Rambo" and "Cujo" for Rudy.  However, when I took him to see Lera, a 10 year old girl who would take care of him and mentioned "Rudy" first, she said "What a great name!"....so it became Rudy.

Max, Zora and Zeke were names I inherited from the original owners.   If Yamisi is still lurking, maybe she can shed some like on the names for Zora and Zeke.   Max was named Max by his original owners "Because he looked like a Max"

Margie named her dog, (a mongrel) Rusty.   He was all black, except for some rust-colored fur in his snout, therefore he was named Rusty.

Blusky&Manny were already named when I adopted them in 2003&2004!
I have middle names for both of them;Blusky is Blusky Ulyssess Graham and Manny is Manny Frank-lynn Graham. When I decided on these names the more I used them the more I liked them.

Schatzi's name is german for "little gem" or "little treasure". It took awhile to name her, bu that was the name that just fit. She was almost a Rudi. We always say that when we get aggravated with her we can call her little "Schitz"!

Being a retired Armed Forces family, we had to have the ranks in the names of the furkids ~~ Sargey's full name is Sargeant Maxwell TynybutMyty Spilker and Looie's full name is Lieutenant Lazlo TynyerbutMyty Spilker.  Sargey's came to us as a puppy so the only name he has ever had is Sarge (although he was called "Squirt" by the folks who had him before us.  Looie was a rescue who came to live with us in May 2005.  His background is unknown as he came from a abuse/neglect situation.  The Humane Society in Spokane removed 30 dogs, rabbits, cats, pigs, etc, etc......They had no history of the names of the animals, so at the Humane Society, he was known as the Pup in Crate Number 9.  I'll never forget how he looked in that crate.  I knew and I truly believe Looie knew the minute we made eye contact that he would be coming with me to his forever home.  So did my girlfriend who went with me (we went on our lunch hour from work, the first day, they put the dogs up for adoption.  They opened at Noon, we were there at 12:01 p.m.!  Sarge and Looie bonded immediately and are now inseparable....hard to believe they have been together for only two years....they act like it's been a lot longer than that!

Our first two came from the book. Hansel(moosie) & Gretel.

When we got Zeke the breeder was calling him Eziekel which became Zeke.
Then we got the girl friend for him.
Aunty thought Zeke and Zelda sounded good and we agreed.

When Zelda had her pups we were calling them Zsa Zsa, Ziggy, Zeus and Zack.
We kept Zack.

And of course Zena just sounded right with Zack.

Hunny was just soooo sweet when we got her and her fur is a bit of a honey color but I LOVE Winnie The Pooh (BIG Eeyore fan) and Pooh spells honey "Hunny" well the N's are backwards but I didn't go that far!

We used the vowels. Emma was meant to be Kate short for Katriona, but she was not the warm fuzzy puppy we imagined and needed a stronger name, Angus was red and gorgous and looked like a little Scottish characterthat had mad red hair. Oliver was always asking for more food . Ingrid was for just being German and Amy was named Miami when we got her(part of her kennel name) she was to be Uma after Uma therman, but we decided she had had enough changes in her little life.
Who knows what the next one will be...............

Buelah....because the folks who bred her started calling her that when she was a tiny pup.  It just seemed to suit her.  Oscy.....doesn't everyone need an Oscy Bean????
Toby was given his name by his foster family in New Orleans.  Princess Bea because I wanted a name that started with a B and she doesn't look like a Barbie or Betty!

Berman is named after Chris Berman - an announcer/ sportscaster on ESPN (he...could...go...all...the...way!).  I usually impersonate Chris Berman when I'm trying to get my Berman away from the front door (back, back, back, back, back!).

Lucy was Minnie before we adopted her.  I originally wanted a girl and name her Lily, but one look at the crazy redhead and I KNEW she was Lucy!

Sam here:  and I thought she was named after the Duchess of York's Daughter Beatrice also known as Trixie.

Franky came to us with his name and although its not what I would have chosen, I didn't think it was fair to change his name especially since we had to start at the beginning for everything with him (housebreaking, manners, aggression, etc.).  If I could spell the sound of a can opener at work or the crinkle crackle of food wrappers, that would be the perfect name for my lil booger.

Delilah is named after the folk art print by Warren Kimble.  Unknowingly early on,  the Sampson/Delilah tale fits her appropriately as well .....since she dethroned the king (see the former king above).

We usually name our pets after relatives.  But Killian was named for the beer and I got Vivienne from Divine Secrets of the YAYA Sisterhood!

We had 3 ZZZ's.  Zeke, Zelda and Zack.   We lost Zeke (9-27-04) and Zelda (7-6-05).  Could have gotten another blk/tan girl about july 20th but I didn't want another blk/tan girl right away.  Zelda was one of a kind but would have felt like we were trying to replace her and that is impossible.  Found our red female Zena March 2006 from a dog that I had wanted.
So we only have 2 ZZ's but were 3 ZZZ's at one point.
I like my ZZZZZZ's can you tell :2funny:

I wanted to name Petra 'Petula' but my mom suggested 'Petra' instead and I loved it.

Ozzy is short for "Oscar Meyer Weinerdog," named by Amy.

Champ, not the name on the papers, got his name from my youngest son.  We got Champ when Eric was 3 and he told us, "I always dreamed of a dog named Champ" so the name stayed.  I have to find his papers to see what his registered name really is.  I dont remember what we named him.  Champ is the family dog.

Smokey was for Eric for Christmas three years ago and he saw the pictures of two puppies and one was dappled and grey and Eric wanted him and wanted to name him Smokey because he was smokey grey.  Once we got there to pick him up Eric fell in love with the little Chocolate and Tan puppy that followed him everywhere and we went home with a different dog but the same name. (Silly me! I thought having a second doxie in the house would help keep them entertained and reduce the velcroness of Champ.  Now there are two velcro dogs at my feet.  One who wants me to sit all of the time and the other who wants me to play all of the time.  Plenty of barking for all!!!!!)

Skeeter was named Diamond when we adopted her, but that name must have come with bad memories because she always cowered and looked sad when we called her that.  We needed a new name, and spent a couple weeks trying out girls names on her.  Nothing fit, but she perked up and was actually joyful when I called out Skeeter, so Skeeter it is!  I just wanted her to be happy!

Boone and Fella came with their names.  So did Archie.

Leopold was a stray adopted from the shelter, and had no name.  Kevin always wanted a dog named Leopold, from the Warner Bros Daffy Duck cartoon where he is in a spooky house with a cartoon Peter Lorre-type, who has a dog named Leopold.  "Hee hee, perhaps I can use the wishbone of a dog.  Leopold, GIVE ME YOUR WISHBONE!"

I have always wanted to name a dog Gusto.  Fella certainly has plenty of Gusto, but I hate to change a cool name like Longfellow, and he seems attached to it.
