Question some of the pictures of the LHD they have silky looking hair on the neck & back & fringes. Then on the sides looks fuzzy hair does that mean they have more under coat on the sides??? Patches has a small head and a lot bigger body but wonder if it is the fuzzy hair sticking out on the sides. She is loosing weight can start to see some indention on the sides where use to be just straight down both sides. Are you suppose to be able to feel a Doxie' ribs??? have not gotten to that point yet.Of course Patches thinks she is starving at all times feeding 1/4 cup weight reduction Eagle Pack in the am & pm with a few sprinkles of meat mixed in.Some green beans & carrots maybe a couple of times a week, one or two small treats a day Evo brand treats.

Even though Brekke has lots of hair, I don't think hers is very shiny.  The black & tans and the reds who are longhaired, have much shinier coats.  Brekke has pouffy hair all over, except her ears and tail.
This shows it a little, but she is lying down...

Here she is with the pouffy look...

and here's this one, right after treat box 3B finished up with her...

How old is Brekke ? Patches is 18 months so I'm sure she does not have her full coat yet. Thanks for the pictures of Brekke was not sure about a full coated Doxie. How often do you brush a full coated Doxie?, know Patches hates being brushed

Dee Dee and Hallie

Brekke has the closest coat to Hallie's I've seen...and it's fuller than Hallie's! I love it.  Zuzu also has a nice full soft looking coat.

Hallie's coat defies gravity, they call it a spay coat as it often happens after spaying. But Hallie's was sort of like that from the beginning, just shorter. (and my Jessie who I showed in the breed ring, did not get a fluffy coat after spaying so it doesn't always happen). She has no undercoat at all (and does not shed at all which is really nice, even after her bath there is no hair in the drain and I never see any on furniture, etc). If you part her hair, you can easily see her gray little Hallie skin showing. (although her coat is not too thin...there just isnt' any undercoat to fill things in).

I have to smile when someone new pets her because I can predict the first comment and I'm right 98% of the time. "She is so SOFT!" Not a correct coat but I love it anyway. :) Like Brekke, Hallie also has silkier hair on her ears and tail.

Yes you should definitely be able to feel her ribs. I can feel all of Hallie's very easily, and I am still fighting to get another 4 oz off of her. I do brush her every day but mainly because she loves it. When I go to brush my hair, she runs over to me and turns her back and sits and waits for her brushing. Since she doesn't shed and she doesn't mat either, I really brush it because we both enjoy it.

Hallie also thinks she is starving all the time. Will Patches eat raw baby organic carrots? Hallie loves those. I also make her ice cubes (small cylindar ones) with chopped up veggies, banana, a little canned food mixed in (very watered down to keep the calories down).

Patches should not have her full coat yet at 18 months. Both Jessie and Hallie did not get their full coats until they were about 5, and after that point it does still keep growing just not as fast. Hallie's coat is definitely longer this year than last and she will be 7 next month. *SOB*

Hallie sez: Eat, drink and be hairy

Thanks for all the info about coats,Patches only sheds on the sides he silky coat part on her back does not seem to shed ?.Last fall & winter she seemed to track in every leaf in the back yard.(boo hoo) Patches was spayed that is when all the extra weight appeared also if I forgot to pick up Gizmo's food Patches would steal it now that Gizmo has passed on she cannot do that. She will stand on her hind legs and look in Buddy's bowl his bowls are on a stand.About got Daddy broke of feeding her anything from the table but have found evidence Patches has gotten on the table twice. I'm still trying to get more weight off of her at last weigh in she weighed 13# was 14 something.Seems to me like Patches has a small face for the size of her body so trying to get another pound off at least.

Brekke is 6 - her birthday was July 5.  She brought in every loose leaf and every small twig until she was about 2 1/2.  Her niece, Mocha, lives about a block away, and she is four - but still brings things in with her coat.  They both have very fly-away hair.  Brekke weighs 10.4 pounds, but unless she is wet, you can't tell much about her build.  She loves being brushed - one of the really good "mommy" things I did when she was a puppy, was to brush her every day.  I am sad to say I don't brush her every day now, but I should.  She had some ferocious mats the other day, so I have to get back to that routine!  My mom gave her a wonderful brush called a PetGroomPro2 that has a battery, because it does a massage which she dearly loves.  It has the ball-tipped nylon bristles and she likes it even without the massage, because it feels so good - sometimes she moans when I brush.  Many longhair owners told me she would get her full coat by age 2, but Brekke didn't until she was 3, and Mocha was the same way.
Brekke is always a "starvin' dachsie"!  She gets 2 Vegi-Lite biscuits in the morning, her treats are limited to 2 or 3 (always no more than 7% fat), and she gets a spoonful of canned Solid Gold or Merrick's wet, and about 1/3 cup of Solid Gold kibble, 2 drops of vitamin E, and 1/4 teaspoon of her Solid Gold Sea Meal as close to 6 p.m. as possible - otherwise, she nags - unmercifully!

Roberta

Hi I have the other Hairy wonder. Amy. Oliver and her are long hairs both from the same kennels and share a few relations, but the coats are miles apart. Colleen said if it was not for his being big (he is a tweenie) his coat etc was good. Amy well, we think God said long hairs go through that door and she went through TWICE. She has a under coat and and gets a bit fluffy on the chest and the legs due to spaying. Unlike Haillie she hates brushing and its a task to get her to sit for long.
Food wise they both get Hils R/D oliver  a flat third of a cup am and pm Amy about 9 pieces of dried food and either some fresh meat or a third of a foil pack(100g) from my dog. I can feel Olivers ribs easily Amy is getting their.
