I was thinking of hosting an Alaska Bow-Wow in a year or so. Who would be interested?

Some ideas..............I hear the cruise is an OK package but its a lot of seeing Alaska through the windows of a ship, train and bus. Too structured and not enough time in any one area. Lots of folks fly up, rent a car and stay in a hotel. Unfortunately we do not have the room to put up more than a couple of people but we do have room for RV parking and tents. If you want to tour around Alaska while you are here for the Bow-Wow, a good way is to fly up and then rent a small RV. That way you save money on hotels and food.
By the way, our place does have three bathrooms which all have showers.

July is a good month, but the end of August is better because the Alaska State Fair is going on. Other highlights are the great fishing (king salmon) not to far from our place, and of course, Mt. McKinley (Denali) 200 miles north of us. Homer is a great little coastal town 300 miles south, and the Kenai Fjords day-cruises out of Seward are spectacular.

A Bow-Wow is a gathering of the people on this board and their dogs, although not everyone shows up. I've been to two of these at DD's place in Washington. There have been other bow-wow at various places around the US. Naturally its easier for people who live in the eastern part of the nation to attend bow-wows held in their area, etc. At DD's we hung out together for about a week, did all sorts of fun things, toured, shopped, ate, and had a big picnic one day in DD's backyard, everyone pitched in on the food and preparations. The local paper showed up and did a story, too. Alaska is a bit off the beaten path, unless you live on the west coast, its only a 3 hour flight from Seattle. A trip to Alaska is a once-in-a-lifetime type of trip for a lot of people, and so they may want to do a lot of things along with attending the bow-wow. Any other questions?

That sounds like so much fun Patty! I surely would love to see your part of the country. Just not sure how we could do it with four furkids :scratch:....hummm.....this might take a bit of thought!

Well, I'm going to practice taking four puppers to Tennessee (hang on, Chattanooga!!) and I'll see how that goes! :xfinger:

Are you looking at 2008 or 2009? Maybe David in Olney and I can figure out a way to host a Bow-Wow in Maryland next summer 2008. That's a lot easier for people to get to travel-wise.

I was thinking 2009 so people would have more time to plan and save up. I realize its quite a ways to go for the easterners, but its within reach to those west of the Rockies. However, everyone is invited!
And just what do you mean......."that's a lot easier for people to get to travel-wise"????????? LOL!!! I mean, just because its roughly the same distance between Seattle and Anchorage as it is between Seattle and New York City doesn't necessarily mean that we are that FAR away!!!

Hahahahah! Brekke says it sounds like a wrongway Goldfarb to her, but maybe that wrongway Corrigan was the football player who took the ball to the wrong goal? We are not a sports-minded family around here, so she's deferring to her Auntie Brenda, who loves football - especially the Denver Broncos and the Seattle Seahawks, and then in basketball she loves the Portland Trailblazers...

I went to DD's 2001 Bowwow with Gretl and Siglen, then Mike, Sandi & hubby Mark, and Auntie Brenda before Mocha, came to my small 2002 Bowwow. Then I was in Texas twice in the summer of 2003 - in May, for Nikki's bowwow, with Brekke (we met Eleanor), and again in July to Delia & Ron's with Sorcha and Brekke, and I dragged (yeah, right

) Delia with me to pick up Mocha for Brenda, and they kindly had a bowwow with an amazing photographer - professional! We met the amazing fashion model, Miss Chloe Marie, her mom and sibs, too, along with Aunties Barb and Nikki, plus a lot of other dachsie-crazed people - and I should know, 'cause I'm one!

Actually, Karen, we hosted a number of Bow Wows in the past. We haven't hosted one since 2003, though. I think we're overdue. We'll probably do one in the fall when it's not so hot and the weiners will be more playful.

Our most successful one was in May 2003, when we had 15 weiners in our backyard. Here is the group shot. Note that Zeke isn't being really cooperative.

Sadly, about 1/3 of the weiners in attendance in 2003 have since gone on to the Bridge

And remember...no Bow Wow is complete without Weiner Bobbing! Here, my future furkids take their turn with Yamisi, their original owner watching over them.

Dave and I have been talking about this all afternoon........we are seriously considering an RV trip up, about talking to oldest son about going along to help with the driving, and sharing the trip up.........it would be much easier on the furkids to drive rather than fly. Just head over to Western Washington, head up to BC and on to Alaska! And, with it being 2009, that gives us plenty of time to save our money to get there and most likely rent an RV to do the trip! How tempting this would be. My only problem is Randy and I can only afford one trip to Alaska in our lifetime, and I don't think he will really want to include Schatzi! I'll have to talk to him and see what he thinks. We had talked about the driving around part, etc., so who knows.
I was thinking, Patty, that you just might end up with another doxie during the bow-wow. Lots of people coming to Alaska would be a great transport for DRNA!!

noooo, Schatzi would always want to include US!!! We have food and warm bodies for snuggling!! As I said, I have to discuss this with him and see exactly when it is he thinks we will finally make this trip we have talked about forever (it was going to have been this summer since our 25th anniversary was last November). Also, have to think about the logistics and flying or flying to a certain point and then driving and how much time off work if we do that since, even though I have 3 weeks vacation, when my boss is off, I'm off, so I have to remember that all those weeks aren't really mine. BUT, I have two years to possibly plan and will think seriously about this. It would be lots of fun. In the meantime, a Maryland Bow-Wow would be an awesome trial run and I could get Meghan to go with me. That I can do in a weekend from S.C.

Love to come but we could not get pp for monsters and when we looke into going ealier this year the costs were to high as we had tofly via LA transfer to mid USA then getthe flight to Alaska, so we like Ms H and Dee Dee will wait for the photo's.

I'm bummed out that you and Hallie cannot come..............the guest room was always yours....first and foremost. Now we will have to auction it off. Come on...you are only three hours away! OK....I do understand....I hate to travel, and it will only get worse the older I get, but I will always welcome visitors!!! I enjoy taking time off from work and staying home, with my pets. so I really do understand. BUT, I hope you realize that when Dan and I go down to Seattle to visit his sister....you are going to have to see us and whatever!!!

Well that's true, who knows what 2009 may bring!

My major problems are, I can't fly because Hallie is scared enough in the car, I know she would really flip out in a plane. So that would leave driving so I'd have to be gone what, a couple of weeks? And I can't even afford to take a full day off of work, I have to average 10 hrs per day 7 days a week to make ends meet. (but we are working like this so we can do better and not have to so again who knows what 2009 might bring!). Also Hallie will be NINE in 2009 and I already am seeing old dog changes in her that scare me to death. She will be 7 in a couple of weeks. :(

Tempting on the caravans! That would be sooo fun!!!!!

I HAD THE BEDROOM??? :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: OK better not auction it off yet LOL I'll stew on it! Me and Hallie and all the camera gear might make it just yet. Beautiful dachshund and horse shots in Alaska...doesn't get better than that!

Merlin, I would think you would be on your best behavior and not even thinking about running away. You know you get to RIDE to Chattanooga in a few weeks. If I were you, I'd quit complaining about not having an escape route anymore and be happy that Karen is allowing you to go anywhere at all. Auntie Karen's really lookin' forward to the trip to Tennessee. She told us a story:

Many years ago, Louis Armstrong, Satchmo himself, was traveling from club to club playing jazz. While he was in Chicago one day, he went and bought himself a new outfit - suit, tie, shirt, shoes, the works. He felt like a million bucks. The next day he traveled to Memphis, where Ringling Brothers was in town. That night he put his shoes out to be shined. While he was sleeping, one of the lions from the circus got loose and was chased into his hotel. People were scared out of their minds. Satchmo slpet through it all. The next morning he got up and found his new shoes in the hallway, torn to shreds - nothing left but a few pieces. A belhop happened by and told him about the escaped lion the night before. Satchmo thought for a moment and then caledl after the bellhop, "Pardon me boy, is that a cat that ate my new shoes?"

I love that story. I'll have to share it with Randy when we are on the road. We are actually going to Chattanooga for a science fiction meeting on Friday. Randy reads a lot of the books. I read one or two. This is one of the smaller meetings and David Weber and John Ringo will be there, two authors he loves. While Randy listens to the authors and does some of his other stuff, I plan to stroll along the riverfront, see their new penguin exhibit at the aquarium and take lots of pictures. We went to the Chattanooga Choo Choo hotel right before we left last year, but I plan to go back this year and have a little more time to wander around there.
You'll have to get your mom to take you to Look Out Mountain. You can see 4 states from there!!
I'll post some pictures for you next week. I'll try to find some dogs there havng fun and take there pictures, too!

I am sure that the "Pwincess" would love to attend.... Just give the time and I am sure we can make it... And, reading all of the posts on this, I couldn't help but giggle.... We are fortunately in the perfect time zone for this...
