Lsat night, mom and dad brought a wabbit into MY house and didn't eben ask my permission!  And they won't let me chase it or eat it or nuthin'!  What's da deal?!?  Ohhhhh, all those wabbit waisins......

Beth here:  I took Chilie out to go potty last night at about 10:00, and when we went to go inside, I saw this small black and white thing hop next to my car.  I saw it was a bunny, so I put Chilie inside and called the bunny over.  It came right to me.  I went and got Kelly, and we brought it inside.  We used Chilie's old cage to make the bunny's den.  The bunny is tame, and is probably lost.  Someone around the complex must own it.  I'm going to post flyers today.  It seems that the bunny may have been outside for a couple days because its paws were all dirty and it practically inhaled a celery stalk, carrot, and a pear quarter.  We're wondering if maybe this bunny was an Easter present that was no longer wanted.  If nobody claims it, I haven't decided if we're going to keep it or take it to rabbit rescue.

Chilie is going nuts!  She's sniffing the bunny like crazy and whining.  She's calmed down quite a bit, but is still very curious about our new house guest.  Chilie will stick her snout into the cage and sniff, and this will spook the bunny occasionally, but it seems ok.  Earlier, they had their noses together, which made me think of Dee Dee's picture of Hallie and the bunny statue.  I'll try to get pics if I can.

Any advice on what we should do if nobody claims the bunny?  Can a dachshund and a bunny live together in harmony?

Oh my! That is really unusual for even a tame bunny to hop up to a stranger like that he must have been really hungry! Sounds like a great bunny! I hope he wasn't dumped and you find he has a good home to go back to.

I used to have two house bunnies, they had litter boxes and rode behind my neck in the car. (Mrs. Moose and Duffy). They lived with my Dane Fred and my last longhaired girl, Jessie just fine. But they were raised with them I had the bunnies before I got my dog children. Hallie wasn't raised with bunnies but she loves the ones at the feed store and is very gentle. But having said that some relatives brought their pet bunny over to my house a while back and it was hopping around our house and Hallie was looking a little too interested for my taste, she would be fine sniffing it and when he was sitting still but once he started to hop (by her babies to boot!!) she whined and squirmed a bit in my arms so I didn't give the opportunity to see what would happen. They have that instinct that can come out when things get exciting. I think things would work out fine if you kept them separated and only had them together with strict supervision and then with Chilie on a leash or something in case she suddenly went for the bun bun.

I can picture a Chilie/Bunny rodeo all through your house lol.

Pictures???

As for the Herd, Guinness, the ultimate wus (refused to chase a mouse sauntering across the dining room one night) was in my arms when my granddaughter's rabbit was handed to me and Guinness immediately started for the rabbit's NECK!!!!

Rabbit was removed, Guinness was insulted and ne'er the twain shall meet!

I'm doing much better with dachshunds and rabbits."

The bunny is doing a lot better since last night.  He (not sure of the sex, but let's just say it's a boy) has eaten a lot of lettuce, celery, and carrots!  I made a flyer and took it to the leasing office to to tell them of the found bunny and see if I could post the fliers, and the management told me that rabbits aren't allowed as pets in the complex!  So somebody must have been housing the bunny in secret.  Therefore, I don't think anyone would come forward even if they did lose a bunny.

I've been keeping the bunny in the cage whenever Chilie is in the room.  Chilie is doing very well with the bunny.  They go nose to nose through the cage, and the most Chilie does is lick the bunny.....oh, and sniff it's butt.  Still, it was very cute to watch the two of them touching noses.  The bunny was a little startled at first when Chilie started to lick, then was ok with it.  For a few moments he sat there and just let Chilie lick his head!  I give Chilie lots of praise after a calm and gentle interaction with the bunny so being around the bunny will be a positive thing for her.  I think for the most part, Chilie just wants to play and mother the bunny.  There's never been a bark or a growl.  But if they do meet when there's no cage between them, I will have Chilie on a leash so if bunny bolts, Chilie can't give chase.

Chilie may have acquired a sibling......  :thumb:  Will be interesting to see how it goes....any pics of the two?  What does Lara think of the bunny?

So far, I've posted fliers up around the complex, called the local Humane Society, and posted a notice on Craigslist.  Nobody has come forward to claim the bunny.  So we very well may have acquired a new family member!  Lara loves the bunny, of course.  Chilie seems to like the bunny too; she shows a lot of interest in it.  Yesterday I let bunny out of the cage and had Chilie on her leash to do a meet and greet.  It went well.  Chilie was VERY good.  When I would give her leash some slack, she went over to the bunny and sniffed it all over.  She never once growled or tried to nip at the bunny.  I don't know if the two of them will ever lie next to one another, but at least Chilie is calm with the bunny.  Here are some pictures.
