More questions was think about getting Buddy a large Kiddy Pool for this summer since it is very hot here in Tulsa Ok in the summer time (I hate it) but was wondering if miss nosy butt Patches would be able to get over the side of a large Kiddy Pool then not sure if she could swim with those short legs.
Patches should be able to FLOAT well we went to the vet today she weighs over 14# I about croaked started her on Wellness Weight reduction food a week or so ago,now will start crating her when we eat think hubby slips her food under the table. She may have to learn to like green beans that may be all she gets till I get her down to 10# I hope.
Its getting to where just rich people will be able to have dogs in the future vet prices keep going up & up very hard on those on a fixed income. The vets should have a Senior Day or something with 20% off on those people on a fixed income Seniors and those with Disability need their Pets desperately sometime it is all they have in their life.

Ps; everyone checked out ok,all shots & heartworm meds for 6 months.Buddy washed the vets face for her,Patches made her rounds to everyone in the office for belly rubs.

yes and NO. Angel Angus could swim and took every ocassion when it came up and was a strong swimmer, but Angel Emma just sunk, the pair we have now would not dain to get their tootsies wet. But I would never everĀ  leave them alone with any water as in a baby pool etc as they may not manage out. Ok if you can be there all the time to supervise.

Zoe loves to swim and we did buy her a small soft sided baby pool year before last and she loved it...of course she couldn't swim in it...but Roberta is right...one of us had to be out there all the time to watch her just to make sure everything was okay....she could just wade in it and we only filled it a little bit so she could lay down in it with her head out of the water....but doxies can swim and we have an above ground pool and both Winston and Zoe swim in it with us during the summer...they love it.  They float around the pool on rafts with me and we have a lot of fun.

ps:  I know what you mean about the vet being so expensive anymore....all of my 3 just had shots, heartguard and frontline....omgoodness...what a bill.... :verdict:

Buelah LOVES to swim anywhere.  Toby WILL swim when it is really hot and I am in the pool.  Oscy is NOT a fan of the pool although he likes it when I take him in and hold him.  Interestingly enough he loves the beach.  I suspect it is because he has control of how far in he can go where in the pool he only has the top step before it is over his head.  Princess Bea acts traumatized when she is anywhere near any body of water....including the bath.  I honestly did not know that a dachsie pup could squirm that much!

I'm with Roberta....see if they enjoy it and keep a close eye on them....

My Sparky used to LOVE to swim - would jump right in our above ground pool with us and paddle around happily, or climb up on a raft and float around with me.  We always ALWAYS made sure we had the gate around the pool locked if we weren't in it, though.  Better safe than sorry!

All of my dachshunds would melt if they tried to swim.    Heck, I can't even get them to go out in the rain, let alone intentionally dive into a pool of water.

I thought I read somewhere once that all animals, except for humans, have the natural ability to swim.  Anyone know if that's true?  If it is, then all doxies CAN swim; it's just a question of whether they LIKE/WANT to swim.  We bought Chilie a kiddie pool one year.  When we put her in, she frantically swam to the other side and tried to clambor out.  She didn't like it at all!  Later on, I put her in the pool again to see if she would like it, and she just stood in the middle of it with her back end floating! :2funny:  Never tried the swimming thing again.  It's just not Chilie's thing.

Penny is convinced that she will melt if she gets wet! LOL We bought her a kiddie pool once and she was horrified at the notion!

Jessie loved to swim, Fred loved to wade but then being 27 inches taller than her he could wade farther then she'd swim! Hallie has swam only once and that was last summer at the doxie picnic, a rare for us over 100 degree day, at the river she normally would not touch water like that but she walked her self in and swam a few feet several times on her own (on a leash and hovering mother in tow of course). There have been a lot of horror stories I would never leave water in the pool without you being right there if she got in she wouldn't be able to get herself back out.

Porky goes swimming almost every day in the summertime!  He loves it more than anything else!!!  He swims very well, but since he likes to swim in the lake, I put a life jacket on him just in case he gets too tired before I can get him back to the shore.  My brother's dchshund, Bandit doesn't like to swim at all.  He can do it, he just gets really freaked out.
