What are the typical weights of Doxies for Standard, Tweenie and Mini??  Also, is there a name for the ones that are smaller than a Mini???  Just curious about this because I was told that my Boo was smaller than an average Mini, he weighed in at 10 lbs.  Also, Emmy is tipping the scales at a whopping 9 lbs. and hasn't had any drastic growth spurts lately, she has been 9 lbs. for about a month now...  She does look alot like Boo, and they could be related somehow I am sure, but I am not sure if I just keep getting the tiny kids or if they just don't eat enough...  Not sure how that could be, since Emmy eats like a horse and when Boo was alive he ate just the same way...  I give them breakfast and dinner, and a snack or two in between, then of course my kids like to sneak the snacks to them when mom is not paying attention...  lol   Anyway, if anybody can help me with this I would appreciate it...  I am lost and confused about little Emmy's size...  She seems soo small...   :dontknow:   *hugs*

In America, dachshunds are not bred for size, so you get a whole bunch of dachshunds that fall into the "tweenie" category.   In Germany, where they are bred for size you have three types IIRC:  Kanincheteckel or "Rabbit Dachshund" is the smallest, tipping in at less than 7 pounds at 1 year of age.   Miniatures are considered under 11 pounds (5 kgs) at 1 year of age.   Everything above that is a standard, although true standard smooths should be in excess of 20 pounds.   I once saw at a dachshund show some monstrous standards that weighed between 35 to 39 pounds.  All 10 pounds of Max charged up to their Xpen and started barking of a storm at them.

Because Americans don't breed for size, the miniature category often gets pushed to 15 pounds.   Rudy was a 12.5 pounder.  I used to call him a "jumbo miniature".   Zora and Zeke's breeder considered them miniatures, even though they both weigh 13 and 16 pounds, respectively.    Likewise, the standard category gets pushed down, and dachsies in the 15 - 20 pound range are also referred to as "small standards" or "tweeners".   I would definitely consider Zeke a small standard.

It's very confusing.   I think the AKC feels that you already get three times the dachshund coverage at shows just by separting the breed by coat.  If you separated by size, it would give you twice as many dachshunds in a show.  At some German shows, they are separated by all three weight classes and all three coats, giving a total of nine dachshund categories.  Talk about loading up!

Still, IMHO, I think there should definitely be a size classification for dachshunds.   The "true standard" dachshund is becoming a rarity.  It would be a shame to see the larger dachshunds literally "bred out" of existence due to the popularity of the minis.

According to the breed standard from the Dachshund Club of America which is the standard the AKC uses.
There are 2 sizes. Miniature: that is 11 lbs or under at 12 months of age and older, and the standard size: which now is normally 16 to 32 lbs at 12 months of age and older. There is a gap between the two that is unofficially the tweenies but according to the standard they are actually considered standards.

Guinness is a seven pound mini.  Rosco is a tweenie who started at my home at 22 pounds (!) but has slimmed down to around 12 -14 pounds.  Merlin and Beau are both small standards, weighing 17 pounds.

Minis are adorable, it's true.  But doxies were not developed to be so small.  It's hard to imagine a 25 or 30 pound doxie.  It would look like a mini basset!  What is the largest doxie on Wiener Writings? :thinik:

I'm doing much better with dachshunds and rabbits."

Thanks guys...  I always thought there was just the 2 sizes...  I guess I just get little ones... lol  Although, my Bridgette, who I lost to cancer, was about 14 lbs...   Is it possible that if two minis are bred that you could get a smaller puppy???  Who knows...  lol  Kinda confusing isn't it...   :dontknow:   Thanks for the input, it helped, I will just consider Emmy a "tiny mini"  lol    Wow, Karen, Guinness is only 7 lbs..   He's a little guy isn't he...  I am curious too now about the largest weiner on the board....  What about the smallest??       Thanks again everybody....

I haven't seen her post here in a while, but Krista (of L & C) has a mini-wire Chloe who IIRC was only 6 pounds.   Don't know who the current largest is, but Jeri & Kevin's Archie-angel was 45 pounds when the first got him, but he slimmed down to the mid-30s.  When the board was first put up back in '98 there was a standard dacshund named Otto who was around 40 pounds.

Then, there were the "monster" dachshunds at the 1999 Frederick DCA gathering.   There was a pack of them from the same litter, 4 b/ts between 33 - 39 pounds and 1 red weighing only 16 pounds...so yes, you can have varying sizes of dachsunds from the same dame and sire.   Zeke and Zora had the same dam, but both of them are very different in sizes.   If we could get Zeke to fill out a bit, there would be a 5 pound separation between the two of them.

Very large dachshunds look no different than their miniature counterparts.  Their proportions are exactly identical, just in larger scale...and yet they still look very sleek at their large size (particularly the smoothies).   It would be as if someone took your miniature and put an enlarging ray on it.

I think Rich had Stormy on a diet but when I met them 6 years ago Stormy was about 35 lbs.
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

My Zeke was about 28 or 29 lbs most of the time.  Zelda and Zack ran about 25.   Zack's brother Otis from the same litter of Zelda's was normally about 33 lbs.  When I took them to Sharon to see if I was right about which one needed a show home she took one look at Otis and called him Tank.  but like she said if he ever fills out all that loose skin he will be gorgeous and he was.  Zena runs about 26 or 27 but her mom was38 but Sue's pups are too heavy so she would probably have been 33 or 34 in normal homes.

Porky weighs 10 lbs.on his "hefty" days.  But, that's only if we weigh him right after eating.
