I will be bringing my puppy home in a few days.    :apls:    We will obviously be working on housetraining, but I would like to start on other commands as well. What kind of schedule/pace do you recommend? Which commands should we start with and how long should it take for him to "get it". Do we wait to move on to other commands until he's learned the previous ones?  I plan to work with him for 5-10 minutes at a time 3 times a day on the "word" commands.  Thanks!

Just a minor point: use "down" as in lie down and "off' to get off furniture, or not jump on someone.  And use something like "go make" for pottying.  I tell The Herd to "go make" and they go into the yard and at least pee.  Often I tell Guinness to go make and he poops.  For total couch potatoes, it helps in bad weather to tell them to go make and get it done so they can come back in.

Good luck, you have to be pateint persistant and persivere.
we found that if you feed or watered take them out to where you want them to go, and be patient it may take a while they sniff play, and even if it is raining wait, decide on  a word for going, with Amy and Ingrid we used "whats a good girl do" which then led to go girlies, and when they go praise them to death, cuddles, treats if you want to go down that route.
They all have their ways of conveying they need, nose down, sculk away, lift them out and walk with them, and if you think they should be needing stay for a while. It takes time and effort even in te middle of the night, but they will get the message.
If there is two you you should try and keep the commands the same.
The command for wee wee's we have always kept seperate, the other commands we were told by a trainer need not be sit, stay etc but words we were happy with. So we use WAIT (for stay), HERE(for come) and more than the words its the tone, when praising go for broke,  the humans around you will think you and idiot, but jnr will love it. When our lot are off leash I use the term "EXCUSE ME" and it has always got there attention.

But most of all love Him, they are puppies for such a short time.

Speaking of speaking...there was a dog handler on Jay Leno one time with a group of dogs.  One started to bark and the handler turned to the dog and said, " No talking!"  The dog stopped talking!

Cute.

Good luck with your puppy!  I haven't trained a puppy (We got ours as an adult rescue), so no advice here. But have fun!
