when we first got our rescue paddy the breeder told us that he didn't bark understatment of the year. when we used to put him the yard he would start howling like a wolf. one day in the house me and my sister was mucking about and howling at each other and he joined it its so cute he throws his head back all you can see are 4 teeth and howls at the top of his voice. now when we put him the yard he doesn't howl because he wants to save it for later so he can have a little singalong. and when he is done he lays down and goes to sleep i think he finds it relaxing
it's not often you will find a dog who is such a wonderful companion who is courageous funny cheeky wonderful,l big bed bugs intelligent and strong willed and if you do you have found a dachshund

Hi

Yes my daxie howls, it is hilarious and was a bit surprising at first! We have had 2 daxies and both howled, usually if left alone and they didn't like it. My mom had a daxie that would howl when she played the organ and would howl throughout the song.

Wonderful animals aren't they!

Max-angel used to howl when we left him alone...a low mournful howl.   He would also do the hound yelp when he saw something that got his attention kind of a "Barooooo" before he goes into a barking cadence.   Rudy-angel never howled.

Zora howls, but like Max, usually as a precursor to her barking cadence.   It's kind of an "Alert!" sound.   Zora has a far higher pitched voice than any of my dachshunds, past or present, so her howls are much funnier.   Zeke, like Rudy, does not howl.   He either makes a single bark or goes into a cadence of barks.   Zeke has one of the deepest, biggest barks of my dachshunds, but that is probably also because he is by far the largest dachshund I have owned.

My two standards bay and howl.  I used to own a basset hound, so I really enjoy the deep voice of my dachshund.  Dr. Beau Leaky (yes, he is!) is my black and tan standard, and he will wind himself up and start baying, which gets my grey dapple standard Merlin the Magician howling.  Then my tweenie Roscoe starts arfing and my mini Guinness starts yipping!   They all wind each other up.  Also fire engines will set Beau off which sets every one off.  What a cacophony!

I'm doing much better with dachshunds and rabbits."
