Last night, we gave the grrrrls a marrow bone each (frozen).  This is something we have done many times.  I made sure the bone didn't have extra pieces that could be swallowed.  It was a normal thing.  About 2 hours later, Dolly was throwing up all over the place.  After what we hoped was all of it was out, she seemed so weak.  Mark carried her to her daytime bed in the laundry room.  She didn't protest.  Both of them always sleep in the big bed.  I didn't hear a peep out of her all night and I was so afraid to go into the L room this morning.  I was afraid that she didn't make it through the night.  Well, the old girl got up slowly and stretched and slowly made her way outside where she did business.  She came right back in and went back to bed.  She looked better than she did last night and I was relieved to see her awake.  She is still quite lethargic.  She did eat some boiled rice and pumpkin for me this morning. She got breakfast in bed.  When The Grub stops eating THAT'S really bad, so I was again relieved.  I missed a lot of work last week due to my back problem so I prepared to go ahead and go to work.  She seemed comfortable.  I am going to walk home today at lunch and check in on her.  If she hasn't improved, I will call the vet and try to get her in as soon as we can.  If you can spare some rays for my sweet Dolly, I'd be grateful.  I'm going to throw out every last one of those marrow bones, as we think that was the source of the problem.  Though, Maddie munched on hers AND snitched Dolly's once.  She didn't suffer any consequences.  The only other thing I can think of is, Dollers has a heart murmur.  She is almost 10 now.  Could it be that is the problem?  I'll keep you updated.  Thanks for thinking of us.

Well, now I know that when pumpkin comes up...for the 2nd time...it's really orange and does nothing for my decorating scheme.  The li'l grrrrl seemed more lively when I got home for lunch today.  She went outside and sunned herself (it's in the '70's today) while I ate my soggy sandwich from Friday.  Water is the main thing so what I did was put some kibble in the food processor and pulverized it.  I added about a spoon full of rice and about a 1/2 cup of water.  She ate/drank that readily and in the 20 minutes I was there, it stayed down.  We'll see when I get home at 5.  She was ready to snuggle back down....Maddie was NOT...LOL.  So I tucked her in and walked back to work.

If she can't keep things down by this evening, I'll get her to the vet tomorrow.  Thanks so much for the rays.  I kinda felt guilty asking, 'cause I haven't been on here a lot.  Been dealing with my own crud.....back and just low spirits.  So it was nice that some remembered us.  This board was my very first home on the internet many years ago.  I may take a vacation but I always come back.

Rays and cuddles to all those puppers needing them and hugs to the hoomans who are not feeling well or having difficulties at this time.  Special super duper rays to Penny.  I KNOW you are dachsie TUFF!  Get better soon li'l grrrrl.

I'll keep y'all updated.

Hi, since I am new here I just wanted to let you know that all my rays are going out to Dolly and Penny.

My little Tuttle had the same thing a few months ago. He was sick all night and was very drained. He finally stopped getting sick and was slow for a few days. My vet could only come up with the doggie flu. I was worried that he ate something outside that upset his tummy. But the vet said that wouldn't have made him sick all night. She told me to keep checking his ears for warmth. That is a good way to check their temp. And to make sure he had plenty of fluids. Hopefully that is all she has. Also the I work with a part time vet technician. She said that their is a bad flu going around for dogs and cats both this year around this part of the country. I am in Nebraska.  And that if you think that one of your puppers has it to try to limit contact with the other puppers. I know that is hard, but it is better in the long run. So hopefully that is all Dolly has. I am keeping my fingures crossed for you and Dolly. Please keep up posted on how she is feeling.
I am a better person because I have my Mimi and Tuttle and now Carson!!!

Sending rays Dolly's way.

My new vet withholds everything -- water and food for 24 hours when they have an episode like this and, if necessary, gives them fluids subcutaneously.   So far, it seems to have worked with Zeke during his episodes.

Sandishooligans

Thanks all for your rays.  David!  How IS Zeke these days?  No news is GOOD news?  I hope?

Dolly seemed a little more chipper tonight when I got home.  She ate a little crushed Innova with about a spoonful of rice and about a 1/2 cup of water.  So far, so good.  Then about 8:00, I repeated that recipe.  The Grub even wandered into the kitchen when I was making dinner.  She seemed very interested in the jumbo shrimp in garlic and butter cream sauce I was making.  Of course, she did NOT get any samples.  Right now she is sacked out on the futon here in the computer room.  She must be feeling a little better because last night, she didn't care where she slept.  Tonight, she didn't want to be by herself in the laundryroom.  Madderoo is snuggled up right beside her.  I'm being very watchful on the water intake and the dehydration threat.  Since she's urped up most everything except her little bit tonight, should I be worried that I haven't seen her poop since I got home tonight?  She doesn't seem in distress.

Thanks again for your concern.
Sandi

No you shouldn't be worried. Sounds like she is getting over the flu. The advice that my vet gave me was to tell me that dogs are sometimes like humans. They will act the same way that we do when they get the flu. Be patient and keep up with the water intake. I am glad that she is doing better. You stll have my rays and my puppers too!! Sounds like "the Grub" is on the recovery. May she keep it up.

Yesterday, I was hoping to see a turn in Dolly.  She managed a light dinner of rice and crushed Innova kibble in about a 1/2 cup of water.  She kept it down all night.  Slept all night in the laundry room, but this morning, I could barely wake her up.  As most of you know, I don't drive and Mark just got on with the State 2 months ago, so is on probation.  So I had to call around a bit but did get my friend to pick us up so we could get her into the vet's office this morning.  I did get a poop out of her this morning.  It was soft but not runny...sorry for the sordid details.  When we got to the vet's, she proceeded to urp up her breakfast of kibble and rice.  They weighed her (in the kitty cat scale) and she was at 16 lbs.  The last time we weighed her, she was 19 lbs.  I had been attributing her weight loss over the months to the present food she's on.  Now I don't know.  I think I'm putting myself into a big spin of worry.

Anyway, that's where it's at right now.  She will be getting blood tests and an x-ray among other things.  We'd be continually grateful for all the rays you can spare.  This is not fun. :(

Oh no!  Poor sweet girl!  Sending rays that Dolly starts feeling better soon.  Let us know what you find out.....

Oh no Sandy! I missed this whole thread. I am so sorry! This is the worst thing Dolly has gone through since you came on the board, isn't it? I can imagine you are scared to death...but, as my step mother would say, that is just borrowing trouble. And as Rich once told me...the things we worry about the most usually don't happen the way we fear anyway. But I know, you can't help but worry...

I just think it is odd that this happened just after the bone. Seems to point to something to do with the bone which would be good. Many prayers that is all it is and can be easily remedied. You said she lost some weight since changing to a new food, have you also noticed any change in her behavior, before the bone? I'm glad you were able to get her to a vet, you will get some answers now and they will know the best way to treat it. Hang in there Sandy, I agree, times like this are NO fun but you will all get through it. Dollars-no-sense, you just concentrate on getting well and let your sister beam her doxie rays on you!

Dolly came home today.  Bloodwork was negative and x-ray was negative.  She is still very lethargic and ran a temp at the vet's ofc this afternoon.  For meals, she is to get a small meatball size amount of the food that came home with her several times a day.  She also has an antibiotic that she's to take in the morning.  Maddie is, at this moment, crying and giving her sissy kisses.  I sure hope she feels better tomorrow.  Oh, they hydrated her under her skin, so the water intake shouldn't be a problem.  I hate to see her soooo forlorn looking.  Dolly looks forlorn when she's feeling good, so you can just imagine her Eyeore look now.  Thanks again for all your kind thoughts and dachsie rays.

Kari

Glad to hear everything is negative but sorry that she isn't feeling better yet. Tons of San Diego rays headed her way and I hope that the fluids will help her out!

Poor Dolly.  Does she like green beans?  I find I can get Clifford to drink more liquids if I put the water from a can of salt free green beans in his dish.  Rays coming full force.
