Wow what a story! That boy is definitely a hero. A hawk swooped at my Jessie when she was a pup, I was able to scare it off before it actually got to her and a friends black and tan longhair mini was attacked by a hawk, who basically "debarked" her when it's talons went into her throat, she could never bark very loud after that but other than several punctures, she made it through OK. (my friend beat the hawk off with a broom).  I was walking Hallie at the park a few weeks ago (in town) by the usual big group of seagulls and I noticed a bald eagle flying through the middle of them...I could almost have thrown a rock it was that close. I watch Hallie in her own yard now yikes.

That is an amazing story - what a smart boy to have reacted so quickly.  Scary-scary for our babies....Thanks for posting the story !

That IS frightening!  I didn't know that hawks and other predator birds would actually swoop like that!  Thanks for posting this Merion.  I'm going to keep a closer eye on mine when they are in the yard!

Great story we were at the park several years ago walking all the dogs. Gizmo was with us she weighs about 8# she had her coat on
a Red Tailed Hawk was up in a tree he had his eye on Gizmo we walked circle the hawk turned with us never taking his eyes off Gizmo. Gizmo's big brother Jake the Bouvier was with us so he always protected little Gizmo if the dogs & humans had not been there I'm quite sure Gizmo would have been the hawks breakfast. Gizmo was an adult then hate to hear about little tiny dogs out with no one around.

There was a "Funniest Home Videos" clip that showed an very un-funny clip about some people who had their pet mouse out of its cage, and a hawk swooped down and got it.  After that, I kept, and still keep, a close eye on Ozzy and the sky.

Wow!  I had to save my girls many years ago while house/teen/petsitting for a family.  They lived next to a park where I walked my girls - Heidi, Gretl, and Siglen at that time.  A Burrowing Owl, and a large one at that! - they're usually smallish - 3 pounds normally around here) swooped in for some dachsie dessert!  Luckily, I had on my school jacket which is red with a bright golden yellow lining, so I opened up my jacket and gave my best hawk-sounding imitation, and the thing hit its brakes and back-winged to get away from me.  The teens I was watching were in awe that I scared it off from my furkids!  This would have been 1995, so Heidi was 10, Gretl was 7, and Siglen was almost 1.

We have a family of red shouldered hawks living almost in our backyard, and I know people thought I was crazy when I made comments about them coming too near the dogs.  They have taken fairly large birds from the tree in my yard.  We also have vultures that fly around.  Now I love vultures, can't see enough of them flying around....so graceful in fight....but if they come too close to ground, the kids have to come in.

My dil's mother has a Jack Russell that chases a resident vulture in Cape Coral.  We had just Taffy the last time we were over there, and Jack chased him away.  I brought Taffy in....he was much too close, and she is not much bigger than a puppy at only 7 pounds.

I am truely surprised some idiot did not try to have charges pressed against the boy for harming a hawk.
