Depends on whether the person is nice or obnoxious.  If you it's just chit chat that you don't want to hear, nicely tell the coworker that you are busy and cannot chat.  You nay need to become progressivelt firmer until the message is understood, but eventually this person will leave you alone to pursue another target.  If the coworker is griping, gossiping, in engaging in inappropriate workplace converstaion, then tell that person in no uncertain terms that you don't want to hear that kind of talk now or ever, and to place not talk to you unless it is work related and concerns you.  Personally I have bitten my idiot co-worker's head off enough times that she is afraid of me and leaves me alone.

Hmmm...That's a tough one.  If you don't collaborate much with the person, you wouldn't have to worry about getting really rude with them, but on the other hand, if you deal with them a lot, it would be harder.  Maybe just ask them or just act totally uninterested in what they have to say??    :dontknow:   Or...quickly change the subject and interrupt them, which is rude, but might give them the hint that you don't want to talk about it.  Maybe start doing something else as they are talking to you so they see that you don't care about what they are saying.  And, then showing interest when they talk about work related stuff.

I really don't know.  Sorry!

Oooph that is a tough one and I just hate it when that happens. I am not good at stopping something like that either. How about something like telling her the boss got on you for talking too much, that way it would put it on you and maybe she'd stop? HOw about wearing headphones and listening to your ipod all day.  Or how about that commercial where the guy is eating raisin nut bran and the boss keeps trying to fire him but it never takes because the guy is crunching too loud to hear him?

You situation isn't funny....but I'm not sure what to do either you are such a nice person I'm sure you are an easy target! (I have never understood why some people think they are so important that they will dominate 90% or more of a conversation...I know several people like that what happened to good old 50-50?)

How about say sorry you gotta be somewhere else and leave the area, or just say you are busy and really need to concentrate, why don't we talk at tea. its not easy,as if it were me I'd be worried the boss thinks I condon it.

Well, I think there are some pretty good suggestions from the previous posters, but I'd probably just take control of the conversation and direct it to a topic that was not at all interesting to that person.  That is of course if you can't just tell them "hey, I'm a little busy, can it wait?"
