Dry, brittle nails...

I don't have to clip Chilie's nails very often, as she is good a filing them down outside on walks.  However, there are a few that grow longer than the others.  Last night I was clipping one of them (which Chilie tolerates, but I think she hates it) and when I went to clip the nail, a part of it split off!  It bothered me, so I stopped clipping Chilie's nails for the night, and Chilie was shaking so I didn't want to prolong her torture.  But is this normal for nails to split like that?  It wasn't a lot of the nail, and it isn't bothering her at all....still, I wondered if there is anything I can do to strengthen her nails.  An oil or something to keep them from getting too dry?

Porky's nails do the same thing!  He doesn't act as if he is in pain, but it really bothers me to know that it might hurt.   I'm sorry i can't help you with this problem since I am battling it myself.  The only thing I can think of is maybe, Porky's are splitting because he needs to drink more water?  I really don't know.   Let me know if you get any good advice on what to do for this.  I'll do the same!

Poor Chile!  I hope those nails don't start hurting!

You're probably too young, but Madge says you should soak your nails in Palmolive dish washing soap.

(P.S. don't do it)
There's nothing like having a dachshund tongue up your nose at 3 a.m.

Some nail clippers tend to split the nails.  I don't use the guillotine type. Make sure that it is sharp too.
Good luck.  Zena is the worst pup I have ever had for getting her nails cut.

Zena---What you got there mom?  Is it the nail clipper.  If you cut my nails I will bite you arm...I don't care how many treats you give me!!!! :cussing:

Mike, I do remember that commercial....."Hey Madge...I soaked in it!"

See, I'm not too young...I'll be 30 in March! :2funny:

Gretchen's nails are like that on her two back feet.  They tend to split when I trim them no matter how carefully it is done or how sharp the trimmer is.  I hate the guillitine style trimmers though and when I trim the nails I use the other kind that cut from the sides like the pros use?
Anyway it doesn't seem to bother Gretch any except that she HATES to be held still and will bite at me for that - not the nail trimming.  Go figure.
