I know we have been less than actitve on the board, and I almost feel guilty about posting our woes since I have not been here for our friends who need us.... but I HAVE to post about King Sol's day.

This was one of our fortunate weeks, we were able to come up to our lake house on Thursday night, and enjoy Friday as a "bonus" day.  The morning started out non-eventful, I was planning all the good daytime shows I could watch ( I love the judge shows) and what I could make for supper since our oldest son was coming.  Next thing I know, Jim is at the patio door with Sol, who has a mouth full of porcupine quills!  As I would later learn, there was a tree laying in the woods, with a hollow trunk.  The porcupine was in the hollowed out tree, and Sol went in after him.  Kirby was right behind Sol, go figure!  So Jim gave me Sol, with his snoot full of quills, and I said "where is Kirby??"  Come to find out, Kirby was following in Sol's footsteps (not unusual).  So Jim grabbed Kirby, while I held Sol and tried to convince him not to scratch at the quills.  Keep in mind, we are 40 miles from the nearest town/vet.  We then locked Kirby in the house, and Jim and I took turns with Sol, one of us holding him down and one of us with the three pliers we were using to pull quills.  Those things are amazing....I had no idea they stuck that hard.  I had to use a sock to tie Sol's snoot, and cover his eyes while we worked out the quills, not fun. Sol was amazingly well behaved.  There was a lot of tears (mine, Sol's and Kirby's...and ok, Jims too) and more blood than I cared to see, but we are all fine...and Sol is peacefully sleeping.  I am amazed that there are no ill effects, knock on wood.  If anyone else has info on their ordeal with porkipines, I'd love to hear them.   :ambulance: :ambulance: :ambulance:

OK, I'll I admit that for a few seconds I felt guilty for being relieved it wasn't his back (but not too guilty). I really feel sorry for all of you in that situation. Poor Sol. I'm glad you were able to get them all out.
I wonder how far Sol will stay from that tree today! At least when Jon gets there, he will get a lot of extra loving from him and can be assured that the little brother won't be stealing any of it. He will definitely have the pity factor working this time.
Give him lots of extra belly rubs from me today and give Kirby some so he won't feel too left out!

P.S. Did you hear the news that Greenies have been reformulated so they are easier to digest?????

Give him extra nosey kisses today.  Do you have to watch out for infection?  Did you put anything on his nose??

Thanks for all the smooches (and the Greenie update Theresa, WOOHOOO I had not heard that).
Solomon doesn't seem too much worse for the wear, he slept well (benedryl assisted) and he is out hunting with Scott this morning.  One concern I have, he developed this zit-like bump on one side of his snout.  Doesn't seem to bother him too much - but he doesn't like it touched.  I will have it looked at when we get back to town on Monday, but if anyone has ideas on what I should do about it for now I'm all ears.

Kirby is sticking on me like glue this morning, wonder if he has his own interpretation of what went on with Sol yesterday.  Either that or he found out Sol got ice cream and he didn't.....

Poor Sol!!!   How painful to get those quills in the nose!!!   I would definately watch for infection and make sure to keep the nose very clean with peroxide.  I know that will sting, but you do not want any infection.   Since he is already getting a bump on his nose I was definately watch him really close.   I'm sure he will be just fine though!
Since I have lived in ruraly areas, i have had many encounters with porcupines!   When my family's dog got quills in her legs and hind quarters, we took out all the quills and took her to the vet.  They decided to put her on antibiotics, just in case as a precaution to prevent infection.  She wasn't a dachshund but mischievous none the less.   SHe had many meetings with the porcupines.   She never developed infection.

I would definately take Sol in on monday, just to double check about that bump.  They may want to give him antibiotics as a precaution too.  Every vet is different though, so who knows.

Hope your little nose feels better soon Sol!!!!  :comfort:

Here is the Greenies link just for King Sol!!! I recently received an email from the company with the update. You can even get a free sample!!  Once you request your sample you can print out a coupon for  3 dollars off. I really did think of Sol right off when I saw it. I knew he would be ecstatic and so would his mom since she wouldn't have to try to find a replacement. Maybe you can find him some in the store next week to help him get over his weekend.

OH NO!!!  You're not kidding, a nightmare!  So glad you had the nerve to use the pliers and get those ouchies out of his nose.  What an ordeal.  HUGS to you!  Give Sol a special smooch from Auntie Sandi.  Kirby gets one too!

Beth

Oh Sue, I'm so sorry to hear about Sol's terrible ordeal.  Porcupine quills....OUCH!  I'm glad to hear that he's doing ok.  Yeah, I would have that thing on his snout looked at when you get back to town....make sure it's not an infection or anything.  Belly rubs to Sol.....and Kirby too!  He's probably worried about his big brudder.  Hugs to you...that must have been a rough night for both you and Jim. :bandaid:

Oh geez. Ouch! My worst fear being far from a vet when something happens...ack. But you guys (and Sol) handled it really well. That had to hurt like a buggar. And you'd think they'd learn but they don't, my vet says they see the same dogs in multiple times with quills...man just once and I'd leave that critter alone!
