I was just wondering if any of you know the chances of an animal bite becoming infected?   Our Peter was brutally attacked by something today.  The vet is pretty sure it was a cat, but it could have been a opossum, fox, or other wild animal.  My husband and I are worried about his leg becoming infected because Peter has a hole completly through his hind leg.  We didn't discover it until at four or five hours after the injury occurred, as far as the vet can tell.   He is being kept overnight and administered antibiotics.  His leg is VERY swollen and he cannot walk on it at all!   The vet did say it could become severly infected, but she didn't say how likely that is to happen.   She said in some cases, cats that get a bite like this have to have amputations due to infection.

Now, I'm wondering did she tell us that because she thinks it might happen to Peter?  Or just preparing us in case?   I know I have another post about Peter, but just wanted to post another here to see if anyone could answer my questions.   You always have great advice and are a great support so i thought I'd ask.  Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear about Peter's injury.  I don't know much about cats since everyone in my family is very allergic to cats, but I do know that cats get along very well with three legs.

Here's hoping that the infection gets controlled by the medications.
