Patches scared me half to death this evening,Gizmo loves the Purina little soft Chicken drumsticks so every evening about 5:00pm Gizmo starts staring at me for one. We got Patches so I started to give her one too no problems till tonight she was eating hers and started choking on it I did a finger sweep too far down picked her up slanted her down wards patted her on the back no luck.Even my husband got up out of his chair which is something in it self. I was grabbing car keys the vets is right up the street it was 10minutes to 5:00pm when they close. Patches finely got it out on her own I snatched it up threw it in the trash of course she goes looking for it I told her no way.Guess I better make sure her pieces are much smaller.Any ideas on how to help a dog choking???
When I give Patches a milk bone type cookie she carries around crying and then takes it and hides it or gets in my husbands lap to eat it or hide it in his chair. She does this with most treats except the treats I make not sure about the whining part she loves to eat???
I gave up on giving her the chicken rawhide strips suppose to be the fat free ones she carries those around & would whine also???

Hi!  You must have been scared to death!!  What a scary thing to happen.   I read somewhere that there is a hymleic manuever you can use on dogs, I'm not sure where I read it though.   You gently lift the back legs and grab them just under the ribs and GENTLY squeeze.  But, I would definately advise looking that up.  I'm not quite sure if I got the proceedre quite right.   I hope someone else has the answer to that.  in the meantime, i'll look for it.  Sorry I couldn't help more!   I am so glad she was able to get it out on her own.  You might watch for the next few days as she may have a sore throat and you may want to have her checked by the vet to make sure she got no damage to her throat from the choking.

I always have this fear - and I am not sure how to do the doggie heimlich (sp?) either - I guess we all need to find out !!!  So scary though - I would just give small bites......  Smoochies to Patches !

Yikes, I'm glad Patches is okay.  One of my dogs choked on a rawhide chewie once.  Scared the heck out of me.  They never, ever get anything like that anymore.  I will give bully-sticks, but only when I can closely supervise.

That is scary!  The good thing is breathing wasn't blocked so there wasn't as much time pressure.  As far as the walking around crying, Cajsa does that with treats she REALLY likes and thinks we're going to steal from her.  It's like she's worried that she;ll lose it if she doesn't hide it!  Of course now she generally eats the treats so Gretch won't steal it!

Berman choked one time on a Dingo bone - he just got real still and started whimpering.  I freaked out and of course just stuck my finger down his throat.  I'm sure that's the worst thing I could've done, but I did get the piece out.

I thought I knew the doggie heimlech so recently when I thought Lucy was choking, I picked her up, turned her upside down, and started shaking her.  Needless to say, she wasn't too happy and it turns out, she wasn't choking.

I've always thought about taking dog first aid and I think this post may give me the kick in the pants that I need to take it!
