Just brought home a pound puppy - mini dachshund, am looking for suggestions for a name.  Would prefer something Germanic to honor blood lines.  Oops, sorry it's for a male dog.  Thanks for the help.

Oh, I bet your new baby is adorable.  Welcome to the board.  Hmmmm, little boys names.  How about Werner, Gunner, Gunther, Detlef....oh my an old boyfriend for me, August, Bjorn....is that German?  Or how about Markham?  Oh, I don't know where I got these.  They just came to my head as I typed.  Be sure to tell us what you decide and tell us the whole story of baby dog.  I'm Sandi owned by to grrrrls, Dolly and Madison (aka Madderoo).

I thought of Heinz too.  My friend had a uncle named Heinz from Germany who had red hair.  Kevin had a good idea.  That would be a cute name Manfred. (The red Baron).

Hello everyone and thanks for all the fantastic name suggestions for my new furkid!  Sorry it took so long to update everyone, but as you can imagine my days are spent running outside, playing with new toys and napping.  My furkid's new name is Bailey and he is a red long haired mini boy.  Found out after my first message that my husband was opposed to any German names.  We tried quite a few names out and Bailey seemed to fit perfectly.  When we adopted we were led to believe that Bailey was approximately 2 years old (we wanted to adopt  an adult dog not a puppy) once we got him home though, it became evident that he's a juvenile.  We don't think he is even a year old.  Our other furkid, Snowball (a white Westie mix that we adopted 2 years ago) has a Vet appt. in two weeks.  We'll take Bailey in with us and see if our Vet can age him more accurately for us.  So Weiner dogs are a completely new experience for me, I don't even remember seeing more than one up close and that was just in passing.  He's not completely housebroken and we are trying to take him out on a regular basis, but we are still having occasional accidents.  Any suggestions on what works with Weiner dogs?  I don't work outside the home and he seems to have attached himself to me in particular (it's just hubby and me in house) is that the norm with this breed?  He also wants to be on me all the time - any suggestions?  And where should he sleep?  Up to this point our Westie was the smallest dog we ever had and he sleeps with us but he weighs about 30 pounds.  Not so Bailey!  Well he's not quite what we expected but after only 2 1/2 days we love him to death, I'm not so sure about Snowball but he'll get use to having a little brother pretty soon.  He was feeling pretty spoiled being the only furkid in the house.  Oh, we do have a cat also, she's the grand matriarch of the house.  Her name is KiKi and she is 13.  Believe it or not she is actually handling a newcomer to the family a lot better than Snowball and has even been playing with Bailey some.    More about our adventures in future and my husband has promised to post a picture soon also.  If I'm running on to long or violating any etiquette please let me know - this is also my first time posting!  Thanks again everyone.

You will find that Bailey will be the most loyal furkid you can have. Doxies are just that way. A lot of them love to sleep in the big bed with the humans and you will find they will burrow under the blankets and be perfectly happy. Some will also be content to be in a crate or kennel, but the big bed usually wins. If you want a good idea of their personality, go through some of the pages on this board and look at the DOD or Dog of the Day posts. It tells you a little about the dogs on the board and you can also get a feel as to what a lot of them like and where a lot of them like to  sleep, etc. We have decided that we will never be without a dachshund in our home, and I have a husband who never thought he would have a little dog. He only liked the big ones.  That is how much they grab your heart with their personality.

Hi!!  What a cute name you chose!   Anyway...as far as the housetraining thing goes...It takes a lot of work.  WIth my dog, Porky, I had to let him out every two hours until he got used to the routine.  THen, I slowly stretched it out, by adding a half hour every week after.  Then, finally he caught on.  He can usually wait 6 hours now and sleeps through the night without going.  I know it is a pain and very tiring to get up in the night and let them out, but it helps them learn.  However, since your dog is older than Porky was when we got him, you can probably just do the every two or three hours during the day.  Bailey should be just fine at night.

Also..another important thing is socialization with dogs and people.  We learned that the hard way when my little brother, "inherited" an unsocialized weiner dog named Bandit.  Bandit loves our family, but does not like guests.  Porky on the other hand, lives to be around people and other animals.  Especially his cat "brother".   I found a helpful book on the breed called "Dachshunds for Dummies."  (Not calling you a dummy!!)  I too was pretty much clueless about the breed before my brother got his dog.  It helped us quite a bit.  Good Luck with the housetraining!

Also..one more thing....when taking Porky outside, I would command him "hurry" as soon as we got to where I wanted him to go.  then reward him immediately when he did go, so he would learn to go right away after hearing that word.  This helps a lot on cold winter nights when they have to go out and you have to go out with them.
